South Korea's president threw a tantrum and declared martial law, which was cancelled when 190 members of parliament literally scaled parlimentary walls to be able to hold the vote to rescind it, and now a CEO of a health insurance conglomerate that is infamous for denying coverage just got shot and killed in a targeted attack.

Shooter escaped on a bicycle and remains at large.

and it's like yeah basically. the shooter could millions upon millions of people who've had healthcare denied ( or a family member who had healthcare denied). Good luck to the investigators I guess.

so somewhat morbid but I've been thinking a lot about the people who want to dismantle the Department of Labor and union rights... and the fact that those things exist because before them men who ran factories were regularly murdered

inthetatras: My own feelings are complicated. Witnesses have been traumatized, a family has been broken. Other families have also been broken by death and financial hardship due to the state of healthcare in this country.

And if the politicians can't fix it, I can understand why folks would so quickly elevate the shooter to a folk hero for the people.

But first-degree murder isn't a solution, either. We sure live in a time.

I don't think anyone deserves to die, but if we're weighting sins here, the man who has caused many MANY deaths by denying coverage and help is far further up the list than the person who murdered him, which isn't in support of either of them

my current thoughts are basically... murder is wrong and guns remain horrifyingly easy to access and kill with even here (NYC gun laws are very strict), but... if the NYPD's general incompetence extends to never catching this guy, I won't shed a tear

I think that if someone is willing to take a life, they've got to be willing to undergo the punishment/reparations for the act. Cowardly, otherwise.
