As soon as I was able, I packed up to a different country, put several seas between me and my parents and in more than the decade I was away I only went home twice.
I never watched a single episode. I did see the commercials for it though. It just never looked interesting to me.
I love this show and continue to do so. Most people would not say the mother daughter relationship was not one you would want to emulate. Yes they had some great moments of mother daughter friendship, but the premise of the show is that Lorelai was a flawed parent and Rory was the responsible adult.
When you watch the entire show you see that it is not this idyllic relationship. Lorelai was a bit of a mess and often says so. She is immature, hard headed, stubborn and at times irresponsible. However the dialogue, the banter and comedy is what made the fun to watch. Her evolution is that she started as a 16 year old mom and eventually matures.
I think what people do idolize is the town and its occupants. Stars Hollow was magical sweet make believe town we all wish existed. It is very Hallmark with a bit of tongue cheek.
yeah, I can totally see that being an issue. Lorelei is basically a baby who had a baby, her relationship with her parents is one example of it - like omg Mom, you'll pay for Rory's hugely expensive private school but I have to eat dinner once a week with you, omg
I love that show, but it's more about the witty dialogue, it's not actually realistic - like starting with how much junk food they eat
there are a lot of shows I start and then can't watch because it brings out my anxiety, like when a teenager is clueless, or people are just really neurotic and annoying (Seinfield is a no go for me)
I didn't watch Gilmore Girls when it was first aired, but binged it on Netflix a few years ago. I loved it then, but I didn't think Lorelei was a great mom, I thought she was a sloppy mom. She was like my best friend's mom who was always so inappropriate. I thought Rory was like my friend...and I loved my friend's mother, but she was so inappropriate.
Kala_Bijoux: the junk food OMG, I used laugh so hard at that and the amount of it lol
A lot of my friends loved the show because of the friendly mother-daughter relationship. Which I get how this would be attractive in my Asian strict parents society tbh. My parents weren't strict...they were a bit too occupied with their marital issues and their (non)boundaries with us are just too much to handle.
I really get riled up anytime Lorelai is being the 'cool mum' and Rory had to make sense....
Kala_Bijoux: oooh what's the go with Seinfeld for you? No judgement, just curious. I didn't really 'get' Seinfield when it first aired. Mostly due to my age and English not being first language...Seinfeld humor seems more...advanced, back then.
SparkleSkye: tell you what though... The camera work (cinematography?) for that show was beautiful! I'll give it that! 😊
ZeeZuleicca: something about the characters and their neurosies make my anxiety go crazy
SparkleSkye: I know a journalist once asked Lauren Graham if they ate all that junk food and she was like, hell no we don't!
