People can get funny over music. I worked with a guy more than 10 years and we were good friends. After we both moved on to other orgs, we stayed friends. Then one day on Facebook he said no one writes poetry anymore. I said a lot of today's poetry is found in lyrics. I mentioned Common's lyrics as being incredibly poetic, using assonance and alliteration

He said rap music is not poetry. I cited this study that showed some rappers had a greater vocabulary and complexity than Shakespeare, providing the link. He unfriended me.

Well then, he's clearly an idiot. Lyrics, especially rap are incredibly poetic.

Well, the Star Spangled Banner started as a poem.
Music is poems set to a melody.

On the subject of people getting 'funny' about music, i was once talking to a friend of a friend and said how music can take me back to a specific memory, how hearing a piece of music could make me think of a time/place when i was doing something whilst it was playing and she said how "sad" that was, as in lame etc.
I nearly threw fists... I was all "Bitch, step away"...

Cyberpink: Ooh, I get that. I can't listen to Stevie Ray Vaughan without thinking of my sister and snapping beans.Just about any song by Gordon Lightfoot makes me cry because he sounds like my dad. Mary Gauthier's "Mercy Now" and I am in a board meeting in Roseburg.. It's so specific and alive.

I've always viewed rap as more akin to poetry than other forms of music.

SexySiloPuddinPie: Yes, it's not just rhyming the last word but the interior rhyming, the assonance.
