never indicates which one of the main characters is white and which is black, only that they are different in this aspect.

I assumed that Twyla was black. Did anyone else? Does this ambiguity surprise anyone else?

I'm not finished with the story yet, but the ambiguity is one of my favorite parts of it.

That's funny, I thought Roberta was black and Twyla was white. I think it's purposely ambiguous.
