Many of the people are playing canon characters, basically characters from popular media. There are also original characters, OCs for short. And other variants like alternative universe versions, but you probably shouldn't worry too much about that.

You will want to make a journal for the character you are playing.

Your choice there. A common thing is to make a joke about your character as their journal name

Because, uh. She's got an obsession with her setting's technology.

Yeah, for example, I have sugar_and_spice_witch as an username for a witch who literally is made out of sweets.

You can also just use the character name if you aren't feeling particularly creative, it's just that many people like to have usernames that refer to some trait of their character or a joke about said character.

A lot of this is because there are often multiple people playing the same canon character across different games in the DWRP (dreamwidth roleplaying) sphere, so they can't just all use the character name.

Like, there can't be multiple journals with the username naruto.

So people have to get creative. It's up to you if you want to do that, though.

Okay, now it looks like you're playing what we call a fandom OC, which is an original character based off a specific media property (yours is Pokemon).

Okay, just sit down and make up some things that happened to your character and what kind of personality they might have. This will take some thought. Many people find it easier to just use a preexisting fictional character from media. But you can make up your character, totally!
