I joined the company for a one month project, that was a year and a half ago. It's been on a rolling monthly basis since and now they've decided I am surplus to requirements in their big reshuffle.
I'm fine with that, it's been my first independent full time job (I did full time for a years placement as part of Uni though). I didn't expect to be here this long. It's been great, really loved working
for the person who hired me and the former head of my department. They left late last year and it went down hill sharply. Department is half the size it was and morale is shit. I was at the point of debating
if I ought leave or stay anyway. But... for hopes and plans I need to be earning around £19k a year. This covered it. So now I'm not sure what to do. I hate job searching with a passion.
It's like throwing peanuts at a wall and expecting one to make a hole in it. No one gives a shit what degree score you got or what you know you can do. If you know someone in the company, you're in. Else, gtfo.
I've already nudged my former director and department head for leads, but I know I'm going to take a month off and do some heavy SL work. But right now, I don't know past then what I can or want to do.
So, how's that for a 100th plurk. Doing it right?
If you can throw peanuts at a wall and make hole, I think Britain Got Talent would want to see that.
(ok, end of me kidding around)
ZeeZuleicca:
Thanks. And hahaha. That would be a great magic trick, I should try to sell it to Penn and Teller. Pretty sure they are still making Fool Us episodes
And congrats on 100th plurk!
Nicolias_Sadoul: what happened to the Person who hired you? Is he/she in another Company? Do you still have contact with him/her? if not it might be a good idea to refresh These contacs
PacoPooley Yeah, thats the Director I've reached out to already, she's not currently employed and is looking around herself. I need to get her an updated copy of my CV/resume and maybe meet with her.
i hate networking with a passion, so i'm not suggesting it because networking is so fun haha, but you could have a look at
Find your people
- Meetup if there's any kind of professional meetups related to your industry
She's awesome so hopefully she will have some good ideas. 25+ years in high end banking and a number of startups. And very much happy to point things out as they are.
And yes, it's taken me a year and 2 months to make 100 plurks haha. And nearly 4000 replies. I'm good at this plurk thing, clearly.
so, let's take "professional plurker" off the list then.
jackalennui Ugh, networking. You are totally right, I should, and probably look at organisations I could join related to my field. My degree is in Computer Science, but my experience is pretty random.
The placement was server support and user admin, this job has been project support and some analytics work. I'd love to get in to programming but am painfully rusty on any real world languages.
web stuff seems to be easy to get into (javascript, php, ruby, etc) if that's your kind of stuff
also, you could try a design jam / game jam / app jam (ugh, i know, more people)
Woohoo 100 plurks and yeah job hunting sucks I wish you luck and a quick find
I can kinda muddle through PHP. I should probably learn HTML5 and Javascript or Ruby some time. I've been saying that for years. I'm good at learning things for a specific need, less for learning 'in case'
aaaand for networking, if you're going to do SL stuff for a month anyway, can you afford to work in a co-working space? (if there's one in your town) - in my experience that's a super good way to get to
Game jam is waaaay out of my ability range right now. Unless it was in SL. I can make SL games all day hahaha
meet folk in the digital industries
and since everyone there has a startup or work for a startup or knows someone who needs someone who would like to work in a startup ...
I... have no idea what one of those even is. I will have to look them up!
basically a shared office space, with hipsters.
Huh, okay. Well I live just outside London so I would imagine there are plenty in the city. I'll have to look in to that, they sound like quite an interesting idea.
they totally are, i used to work about one day a week in co-working spaces since the company i work for is distributed and has no permanent office. lots of freelancers, lots of startup, lots of churn
also, do put up a profile on github, on stackoverflow, on linkedin
I have a linkedin but never used github or stackoverflow ever. Thank you for all the awesome ideas, much appreciated!
you're welcome, and good luck!
(working in IT myself, and while i don't know the specific situation in / around london, at least in germany it's a great time to find a job in that industry.)
It was really bad here for a while, like, unless you had experience in exactly what they wanted, no chance. Really hoping it has improved in the last few years. I've not been keeping track much.
Only 100? I feel like you are always around with something lovely to say or show us. Seems like so many more than that.
I would say happy 100th plurk but you just had to make it a downer you you...brit. Anyway you know it'll be nice to spend time together pretending to work in SL.
thaumata: Aww thanks!
Well those 4000 replies came from somewhere, I am apparently opinionated but rarely put up my own messages!
Unrepentant: Shhh, you'll do all the work, I'll lounge and crack the whip at you
mirajai:
Welp, found my new job. Professional whip cracker. I can get behind this.
