I ended a business email with a "Regards" salutation. They replied with "Best Regards." What's up with that? Should I up the ante again with "Warm Regards?" Where will it end for god's sake?

Moist, heated regards, of course.

I've always thought regards as a salutation works best with a qualifier. Otherwise, it's just a bit of a neutral word, IMHO.

Regards has become accepted as a salutation. I wouldn't view the best regards as a salutation arms race; it's just the other person's word choice.

I think the old formal snail mail style openings and closings are no longer necessary. I begin my business emails with "Hi Jill" and end with "Have a good day!" then my name.
