I'm of the irrelevant opinion that the hackers, being unable to screw up Sony enough to erase the movie, decided to release the threat of physical violence simply because they failed.
However, in the end, they won anyway because it is unlikely many people would want to risk screwing up their Christmas with a movie theater falling in on them.
