If Doctor Who promotes equality, why has the Doctor only ever been a straight, white, male? His main companions almost exclusively a racial minority, female, or gay?

I've never considered the Doctor's sexuality. I don't know that they're wholly explicit that he is strictly straight.
Yes, he's had wives, kids; but that doesn't state one must be straight to do so.
And the range of his companions, I imagine, is where many consider the show's diversity.
