i know that there have been fundraiser for all sorts of stuff the the past few years, so why not help someone who's a well known member of this community? plus, she makes some of the best skins on the grid
like whatever, you don't like it, you stay out of it, don't donate and don't buy, what's the big deal?
I think the problem was that a lot of the creators have no idea who this person is, and most of them could also use new computers for their SL business as well.
well, i don't have a problem participating in fundraisers for them too, if i like their stuff
I have no clue what's going on, but I tend to feel the same way about people who bitch about events.
Unfortunately, this probably should have been one of those "Set up a blog where they can offer to participate" rather than just the blind notecard drop for someone they don't even know.
the sl is so f big, everyone can shop wherever they want and choose to sell their products wherever they want
they did make a blog for it, i have no idea how designers were contacted
And, as I saw in a plurk yesterday, most of them agree that if you need a computer for your SL business, you need to take care of it yourself.
but anyway, saying no, thanks is all it takes
that may be true, but i like to think that we're a community who helps their own
If it's medical, people are happy to help. If it's medical for an animal, people can't give money fast enough. But a new computer? On your own. lol
i mean, there was a fundraiser for someone's teeth, why not a new PC?
There was a LOT of bitching for that teeth fundraiser as well.
and amesha has medical problems too, that's one of the reasons why she can't buy a new pc, so, well
I've never heard of this skin brand so if I'd been blindly contacted, I would have been "WTF?" too.
as far as i know, she was not the one to organize the event, but her friends
Unfortunately, you're better off holding your own sale for something like a computer. People are pretty burnt out on the personal fundraisers unless it's some medical emergency.
and true, blind notecards are not the best way to do it.... but still, i hate the bitching part
which makes me bitching too, and i also hate that
I know her skins from back when they were still Heartsick and i understand that she cannot work in RL to get a new PC ... SO i understand that her friends make a fundraiser for it. I also
understand that health issues might be more of a catcher for people participating.. I wish people would make a fundraiser for me when I need help but I can also understand that at some point folks just say no
But yeah there is no need to make big ranty plurks about it then, just say no or ignore the invite
I get that her friends wanted to help, but I think they probably should have gone about it differently.
aliciachenaux: probably they should have, i don't know them so i have no idea about their background with events and stuff
but from the blog i see that there's been some positive feedback, so they must have done something good too
Some people will help. But just dropping notecards on strangers is not usually the best way to go about anything in SL, especially if you're asking people to devote time to making something to make money for
someone else for something that everyone probably needs. lol
it's only luxury if you can do without it. or if you have another income source without sl, in my opinion
But that's the thing. If it's your business, as it is for a LOT of these creators in SL, you have to be able to do the upkeep and upgrades yourself.
i mean, i don't even have a computer of my own and i'm ok with it, as long as i have someone's pc that i can use
aliciachenaux: you're probably right, i have no idea how businesses in sl work
and i know that for some other creators things aren't smooth either
but it's not like anyone was forced to do something they didn't like
Tymmerie: i had no idea about that, i'm a mess with taxes an stuff
I actually posted something about fundraisers today (totally and completely unrelated) but I can say that though someone is your friend, and trustworthy to you, other people may
not know this person and so to them it's a complete stranger asking for a computer (regardless of why). I agree with you though, if you don't want to be a part of an event/fundraiser/whatever, no need to bash
it, just respectfully and tastefully decline.
You know this person, so for you it's a no brainer and your heart goes out to her. For others, it's probably odd.
It's like this: You run a coffee shop. Your sole income is this coffee shop. Your coffee maker breaks. You don't go to other coffee shops asking them to donate a portion of their sales to your shop. They might
be saving for a new coffee maker themselves.
Sienia: you have a point. but if i like someone's stuff, i'd even sponsor their trip to paris
aliciachenaux: You'd have insurance on the coffee makers. Also they would be a deductible business expense when you file taxes.
Because you, you are a sweet sweet sweet person.
Either you are running things like a business or you aren't.
I really want some coffee now. LMAO
Tym is right, I have my computer insured and also wrote it off on taxes. She may not have had her computer insured, sounds like she didn't. When she gets a new one, make sure she declares it as an asset.
Super important! So if she drops it, it dies, whatever, she's covered. It's not too expensive, just a couple of bucks to do this.
Her friends wanted to do a nice thing. That's never bad. But they went about it in a way that turned some people totally off.
I think that creators must get hit up sooooooo much that this was the event that broke the camel's back.
Tymmerie: it depends where you're living either. in my country, i'd never set up a company, they'd kill me with all sorts of taxes and check-ups and bribes. i'd give more than i'd earn on those
D
With the new Firestorm and all the updates to the viewer in general, I think a lot of creators are realizing they need to upgrade. So being hit up with this for someone they don't know was just maddening.
The fact that her friends are trying to do something sweet (even if some think they went about it wrong) and that you are upset over what others have said, tells me that she has really good friends.
You know, one idea I've always thought might work, perhaps for her even, is to put out something she's created with a "pay what you want" fee with her goal stated. Perhaps she would sell a ton to help raise $.
She would have done well to have a sale. Everyone likes sales! Plus maybe an exclusive "I need a new computer!" skin. People like exclusive too.
Maybe in addition to what her friends are doing, this can help meet her goal.
IF 10 friends put forth $20 each they could probably get some upgrades to make the computer work... I think asking designers to put forward money for a computer, when they dont even KNOW the person is rude.
