I was taught 2 but have told students either. It goes back to the days of maual typewriting I think.

I do one space & teach one space. APA & MLA say one space. Typewriters used to be 2 spaces due to monospaced fonts.

Used to be 2 when I learned typing, but now computers say 1- they compensate for the spacing.

I do 1 on plurk and texting, usually 2 otherwise but sometimes they get mixed.
