frequently confused by different bottles of translucent gunk in the shower. It is hard to remember which goes where sometimes.

Generally, the more opaque, the more likely it is to be for hair, but that does not always work.

I still say 'creme rinse' for conditioner, which I am told makes me decrepit.

I often get into the shower and find myself utterly incapable of being able to tell the shampoo from the shower gel from the conditioner.

Phoenix59: I am not convinced there *is* much difference. At least with shower gel and shampoo. Except possibly the smell.
