lol well she’s an artificial vessel made to hold sora’s memories/keyblade powers (to eventually become a vessel for the main villain xehanort) but the stronger she got the weaker roxas (her best friend) got bc he’s connected to sora and is the last piece needed to wake him up. anyway xion realizes the only way she can save her friends is to erase herself

the short version is really if you create a replica of a guy and you aren't expecting the replica to have a gender and it turns out hte replica identifies as a girl, actually, even if she might have the body of a boy, well. that's just a trans character you've written. (complete with some of the cast refusing to gender her correctly, unfortunately.)

idk if this is a rose-core character but xion is still. extremely the character of all time. to me.

your boss wants to use you as a weapon and keeps finding ways to. his third in command refuses to stop misgendering you because he only sees you as a tool and will refer to you as such (as a thing, as an 'it', etc) and will call you less than human - less than NOBODY - because he thinks replicas can't possibly have feelings of their own

and so much of xion's story is about clawing her way into not only being her own person - it was so so so so easy to be her own person - but into exerting her RIGHT to be her own person when they keep trying to deny her that. they want to call her a replacement or a fake or say she has no right to exist but she DOES dammit - and yet, the tragedy.

the tragedy: either she dies or roxas dies. they both have the right to exist but only one of them is going to get to LIVE. and that's an easy choice for xion. of course she chooses roxas.

but also [holding up kh1 sora stabbing himself in the chest so that kairi's heart can go free] <- she's a replica of THIS BOY and has absorbed most of his power and memories. of COURSEEEEEE she is a self-sacrificing little gremlin.

"oh she's a kairi clone she looks like kairi--" NO. THAT GIRL IS SORA ALL THE WAY DOWN, AND and yet she's not, becuase kingdom hearts is about how being a copy of someone else doesn't mean you aren't also your own person.

IMAGINE that you are a little boy named ventus and your master in keyblade training (it's like being a jedi) routinely brings you to this crusty, cratered wasteland telling you to embrace the darkness in you and tries to force you by sending monsters upon you

this doesn't work and so your master (xehanort) decides fuck this shit, he'll do it the hard way. and so he pulls out his own keyblade and SPLITS OFF THE DARKNESS IN YOUR HEART to make you into to two separate beings. you, ventus, are comatose. your darkness, given the name vanitas, is not.

the ideal world for xehanort is that the two of you, separately, will grow into equal forces of power that when they clash will give him something called the X-blade which he can use to unlock Kingdom Hearts and grant him ultimate power. of course he can't train both of you right now nad you're comatose

so xehanort takes ventus to his ex, eraqus, who is training two of his own apprentices right now, and [pulls out all the drama] oh my god i fucked up and i hurt my apprentice and now he's comatose and i'm afraid i can't do anything for him but YOU and your GOODNESS and your LIGHT surely can...!!!

sure. that works. ventus is out of xehanort's hands now. and now you are vanitas.

you are vanitas and you are not a whole person and because sora as a newborn heart intervened with ventus, ventus IS a whole person, but vanitas? lol sucks to be you. the other half of your LITERAL HEART is in some other world and you can feel him but he can't feel you and everything hurts ALL THE TIME.

Oh boy

you're incomplete so your emotions slip out of you in the form of monsters known as unversed. you can command them and they make a great army sure, but like, they are born from you and your emotions AND. each time one is cut down, you feel the pain of it dying

and it becomes a feedback loop!

you are also fifteen years old and xehanort is still your master and [shaking the light novels which heavily imply xehanort's training regimine was downright abusive, and also features a scene of vanitas crying and spawning an unversed and getting mad at it so killing it but that hurts so he's crying again and and and and

you are in pain all the time you are angry all the time and xehanort promises that if you can just fight ventus on equal terms that you will fuse with him again and become the x-blade. and that's all you care about now! becuase it's your only goddamn chance at salvation.

vanitas is a prickly little turd who insults everyone all the time and laughs when they get hurt and keeps needling ventus to push him into doing more reckless things, which in turn will make him stronger, (vanitas isn't wrong! but that guy used to be him, so of course he isn't) and even when he isn't hassling ventus

he's just hassling aqua and snapping precious childhood memories in half and then tossing them at her and cackling about it especially when she calls him a freak. god that's such a funny fucking cutscene.

anyway sad abused boy filled with trauma and the magical pain of his emotion-spawned-monsters dying who copes by being an asshole to everyone else and then laughing about it
