Meanwhile, at today's Trump rally

For the life of me I cannot understand why the media's happy to run with the "Joe Biden is senile!!!" bit when this is what Trump's up to
Nox

And the weirdest part is he's done this twice on the same subject (incoherent rambling about sharks and boat sinkings)

are we learning too much about Trump's fears?
I got an aneurysm trying to read that.

We know shark attacks aren't predation because they NEVER come back for a second bite.

That and there's only a handful that will ever actually try to EAT the person, and even in those cases it's usually because there's no other food available and they're starving.
Nox

Like we are an INCREDIBLY poor food source for sharks

tiger sharks and oceanic white tips are like two of the only ones who'd even consider it. Great whites I think you can count all recorded incidents on one hand.
Nox

Since they need way more calories than any one person can offer

while tigers are famous for "I'll eat just about anything" and even they have us at the absolute bottom of the list, and oceanic white tips basically survive by doing the same thing since the middle of the ocean doesn't have nearly the abundance of prey that the coastal areas do so they can't afford to be picky
Nox

but you're also not likely to run into one because of it

I once joked with an EMT that shark bite care is easy. Slap a tourniquet on and pray transport is fast enough.

The real issue with shark bites is not their frequency, but the severity.
Nox

Depending on the shark you could just as easily skip that step and call a priest
Nox

like if a great white takes a big bite out of your torso that's pretty much it

Yeah.

but a porbeagle taking an investigative chomp is absolutely survivable unless they somehow manage to fuck up something vital
Nox

(also porbeagles are cute little anxiety fish and I love them)

Although there are a handful of people who have survived mid-body bites because the shark didn't actually do the shake after biting down.

Sharks are really interesting animals. What intelligence they have is so narrowly focused and things like that.
Nox

Yep. I love them, I just have a healthy respect for them and won't go out of my way to swim with them. With my luck I'd piss them off and get punished for it |D

and probably not see it coming since I'm bad at reading social cues from people, there's zero chance I'd recognize any of the behavioral cues from sharks that say "you need to leave"

(somewhat paradoxically, the bull shark is also one of my favorites, but those are also the ones famous for basically being roid rage with fins and teeth)
Nox

(even they don't actively prey on us, but they're also liable to suddenly decide "fuck this one person in particular" without warning due to being famously short tempered and extremely territorial)

And they can live anywhere. They think they might actually be BREEDING in the Great Lankes.
Nox

YEAH...basically if there's a river involved/connected, they can usually live there.
Nox

Hell there's a golf course somewhere that has them regularly chilling in the water to the point they have to put up signs
Nox

I know there's one in Australia where they lived after a storm swept them in, but I could have sworn there's one in the US where they routinely show up
