Nikko has been very enthusiastically eating the cicadas and their she'd exoskeletons.

Munch monch. I fielded a woman today who was indignant at how many cicadas her puggle was eating.

Me: is he giving himself tummy aches?
Her: he's a puggle he doesn't care.

As she left she said, in exasperation "his poop has wings!"

Me I'm not that concerned about it. They are highly digestible protein. Overeating and getting a tummy ache is really the only problem.

But as long as he's enjoying himself and not getting sick, that's what matters.

Yup yup yup. Some human cultures might have a taboo about eating insects but no dogs do! You'll have a happier summer if you think of it as effort free enrichment!

If it's not detrimental to their health and safety, why not? Just because I myself would never nom on a cicada intentionally does not mean I would deprive a beloved pet friend of doing the same.

Exactly! They should follow their (non toxic) joy.

Yep! Just be careful because their exoskeletons are hard and can irritate the digestive system in large numbers. So like. Eating JUST cicadas is probably out.

Indeed. Better to put them in a glass of Malort.

Yeah I'm making sure Nikko is eating his meals instead of spoiling his appetite with cicadas. (It's what the care staff at the local zoos are doing too! Grizzlies with upset tummies. Nobody wants that.)
