So A and I are heading to Banff next week (with help from jenupton) and I am wondering what we may need as far as hiking goes. We are both in good shape, and acquired and broke in hiking shoes. Just doing day hikes no camping, what are the must haves I may not be thinking about?

karenj as our resident hiker, any suggestions? I assume 10-12 miles is the max we'll do depending on weather.

I'd say layers, sunglasses, something to carry water, rain jacket (?), sunscreen (less atmosphere at higher elevations, so you burn more easily), snacks, headlamp if you have one.

Screenshot map in an app or take a pic of the trail (if there's a map of it at the trailhead) in case you don't have service

And 10-12 miles is a LOT.

karenj not every day obviously that's just the longest we'd go. Last real hiking for me were Zion/Bryce and Grand Canyon, all scorching hot so hoping for more temperate but decent weather. We shall see how it goes.

Banff will almost definitely still be chilly/cool in mornings/evenings. Without the East coast humidity the daytime temperatures will also be probably on the coolish side. It's still fairly cold in Northern Ontario this week.

We are not getting in till 22nd so a bit better but still on chilly side. I don't mind it at all for hiking if it is not pouring, but some sun would be nice. We have had crap weather all month.

Banff and Lake Louise are both spectacular in all seasons.

Oh and I usually try to stop in at the park welcome centre first, and pick up paper maps (one per hiker for them to carry).
