i saw a meme that was like "x-men '97 did more to rehabilitate scott summers' reputation than the last 20 years of comics" or something and i laughed so hard

i don't read comics but i know enough by fandom osmosis to know that scott summers is either a love him or hate him character

LMAOOOO I feel like that is true but more like it rehabilitated his image in this specific era

I know he got more popular when he became more revolutionary and people seem to like him less when he's a "boring" family man

I always liked him in the 90s though so this is really the best of both worlds

and they set up an adaptation of my very favorite mini he starred in, yesss

Scott Summers has kinda always been an absolute trainwreck, the thing is that militant revolutionary leader is more boy coded traiwreck than whatever soap opera is going on between him, Logan, Jean, that clone of Jean, that other clone of Jean, Emma, that Jean from another reality, I'm out of actual examples and would have to start making jokes up now.

This time he's still a trainwreck, but the animation lets his powers feel fucking sweet (which the comics are bad at).

I want to know if X-Men 97 is really doing with Logan and Morph what it feels like they're doing with Logan and Morph, because holy fucking shit if they go for it I will love this show even more.

I ship it but I feel like Morph at least thinks it'll only ever be unrequited

Like- it feels to me that they're absolutely screwing, and Morph has feelings. So much of their interaction only makes sense if they've crossed some sort of friend line.

(Logan is probably very messed up on redheaded telepath, but that has never stopped him from having sex before and I see no reason it'd stop him now.)

dirges: I went to look up some old scenes after catching up the other day and the animation....ow Really drove home how they captured the same look but seriously improved on that front

As much as 3D faking 2D has some flaws to it still, it does allow for some absolutely wild action sequences.

I think it's cool how they are remixing a lot of stuff. It's still comics faithful at heart but in a totally different way.

also because I'm a nerd I recognized that when Xavier started blasting Magneto post-adamantium yanking, they recreated the actual comics panel

like angle, body position etc. I love that.

and the apparent death of the X-Men is clearly a riff on Fall of the Mutants (which happened WAY before Inferno, Scott and Jean going to the future, Zero Tolerance etc)

but that didn't end with time travel so it's still very uncertain and exciting

A lot of X-Men plots in the comics are a little too... reliant on other X-Men/general marvel plots to do exactly straight (X-Men is a soap opera), so remixing plot beats to get the right vibes makes sense. This is definitely working in the same space as X-Men Evo (but starting from a more firmly comics based character/setting bar.

Like- redoing Goblin Queen to not make a deal with a demon to gain powers and completely blank her whole pre-evil personality because she's literally a telenovela 'you slept with my evil twin' plot twist.

I'm just glad they are treating the x-men with so much care and love and respect. not many shows do that

I actually do like Maddie's original corruption and downfall arc - the problem there imo is that when she was brought back they never wrote her as well again

so I really enjoyed that they showed her regular self some respect after her stint being "evil", even if it still ended in tragedy
