she could understand why Winterbourne continues to pursue Daisy. Is it because she is "hard to get" or intriguing? Perhaps both.

Perhaps, but Winterbourne does mention that she is not usually his type--she does not frighten him. Perhaps he is captivated by her beauty?

I too was baffled by this. I suppose it's a chase to him. Sometimes I got the impression she was rude to him. Maybe it's all a game

Having now finished, I agree that it was all a game. I think she was simply playing hard to get. Because she sent him that last message.

true. and she seemed to be a drama queen, especially on page 409 "Oh I hoped you would make a fuss... I don't care to go now"

i agree that the message she wanted her mother to give Winterbourne shows that she was just playing hard to get.
