oki to go along with my previous plurk if I were to get a new computer capable of running sl and creating for sl, should I buy a pre-built or build my own type computer. I'd like to stay under 1k.
building it yourself can lead to greater discounts, but it depends on if you know how to build it or not, cause obviously even if you get the parts, if you have to pay someone else to build it, its going to add to the cost.
Sometimes Bacon: this won't be until at least summer sadly but I'm trying to figure out my options now to prepare.
there's still lots of good deals all year, i got my kid's pc in june for his birthday
Desktop or laptop?
Newegg (dot com) has some complete desktop builds under $800 - but would require a monitor. Free shipping on many.

There is a website I will find when I’m at my pc, you put in the parts you want and I will tell you if it’s all compatible. Even the case size, if the stuff your living will fit
Casey just built her own last year and saved about $600 for the same specs. Now that graphics cards are easier to get again, it's not that hard to build your own.
However, I did buy my last two as prebuilds and I love them and haven't had a moment of issues.
Despite my FH being incredibly good at building computers, we've done prebuilt for my last 2. If we need to add something, it can be done. But prebuilt is just easier and less stress.
my only suggestion, in addition to making sure you have dedicated graphics (any is fine, just not integrated), get at least 16G of RAM and get SSD for your harddrive. That's going to be a difference in price but it will make a huge difference in performance.
as long as you have those 3 things you should be able to play SL and create with minimal issues.
you dont have to know what all these mean, just make sure it says that on the listing.
people are going to tell you all sorts of things on what they think is better but it really just boils down to those
good questions and responses. I would love to see some spec sheets about optimal builds for Second life too. I feel like Strawberry S used to post those, but it's been years.
No shame in buying a prebuilt, but my new one that I just built was right at $1k, It was super easy to put together. I get a pretty stable 75fps in SL wherever I go.
i'm happy to share my parts list as well, dakota picked my parts for me based on budget and what i wanted to be able to do and this is the second pc he's part picked for me and i've been super happy with both builds. my kid is using my old build now.
i do have some fps bottle necking but i am pretty sure that is due to my internet not being able to keep up with SL loading things.
SparkleSkye: Okay, this is my list. The price on the graphics is not what the price is on Amazon. I paid 399, and it's currently 409. The two Crucial SSDs are a Christmas gift, so you can also ignore those prices, or factor them in as later addition. lol

The case and power supply were on sale when I got them, which is WHY I got them. I had other things I was looking at, but I saw I could get Aesthetically Pleasing for just a bit more... I went that route. The case Nimil has is a fine case, and is still housing my previous PC.
I am using the box cooler with my build, so that's why there's not one in the list. It will likely be upgraded later, but I'm not overclocking anything so it's fine for now.
This is a how to good video, and in general, Jay has a lot of useful information, including what to do after it's built.

I did end up getting my CPU from BestBuy, because I would have been waiting like 2 weeks from Amazon. My total for everything, but the two gifted drives, was $1,048.84. I also do live in NH, so there is no sales tax on there.
