I want a story about a boy and a girl who go on an adventure and get close and talk a lot about how much they mean to each other
And then half way through one of them hooks up with someone else
And they’re just like ”nice”
Because there was no romantic tension at all
I feel like I've seen this in something and it ruled exactly as much as you think it would, but it's not coming to me. I'm subscribing to your newsletter
Because my nemesis is the statement “men and women can’t be just friends”
I might just be thinking of jun and eleanor
It’s an absurdly reductive statement about the infinite variations of human interaction
Quinneapolis: shit that WAS Jun and Eleanor
except their hookups were mostly postcanon
this is one of the things that hold up about Akame ga Kill?
might be what Quinn's thinking of
"oh god it's gonna be a har--no he's just dating one of the girls, huh. not even the most plot important one. huh."
The fistbump+”nice” is an important part
Though the whole Akame/Tatsumi/Mine thing was pretty good
I am extremely here for this.
I’m just picturing the moment
Where one of them catches the other slipping out of someone’s bedroom
And there’s just this moment of tension as you aren’t sure how they’re gonna react
And then
For maximum effect neither of them should be gay
Or it should be two wlw girls or two mlm boys
So the option of them dating WAS on the table
They’re just like “nah”
one way or another, A's hookup the same gender as B
Unless A is bi
Hmm no I think Quinn is right
For maximum impact
Rukia and Ichigo had pretty good CR and they did get a lot of shipping but like,
The vibe between them was like the vibe between two guys in an action series who the fandom is gonna ship really hard because they're super close and emotionally invested in each other
Rukia and Ichigo were actually almost EXACTLY what I’m talking about
And one of them lives in the other ones closet
I actually liked the abridged bleach interpretation of like
Ichigo, Renji, Orihime, and Rukia just bring a vaguely confused polyblob
But anime action show romance subplots are their own can of worms
Where a “ship” is often them occasionally looking at each other for two hundred episodes
And making ambiguous comments about being important to each other
In my bleach au Orihime and Ichigo start dating after the soul society arc and no one makes a huge deal about it
Or Orihime and Tatsuki
I don’t even care who hooks up with who just fucking commit to something
A story about two people who are attracted to each other but afraid to commit to anything isn’t inherently bad
But I just KEEP ON SEEING IT
Where they just kind of orbit around each other and flail and blush without doing anything until the ten years later epilogue where they are married and have two children
You know what it’s ESPECIALLY egregious when combined with how girl characters are often neutered by the plot from doing anything cool
If you’re a cool action girl then you can’t win fights or you’ll take attention away from the boys but you also can’t date any of the boys because then you’d be...I don’t know
Pushy or a slut or something
So all you can do is hang out in the background and look hot and worried
What a fucking waste of a character
The ramble is rapidly turning into a rant
You're not wrong, though.
Honestly Ichigo and Rukia's relationship was one of the things I still absolutely love to this day about Bleach
They're just platonic bros
And that's totally OK
it's great
I similarly appreciate that about a lot of the student council members in later manga Kaguya-sama
Ishigami and Kaguya's relationship in particular I adore
A: "So did you tap that?"
B: "Bro I tapped that so many times I wrote Hamlet in morse code"
A: "Daaaaaaaaaaaamn!"
This was what made me stop watching Star vs. the Forces of Evil
Cringy love triangle?
I totally dug it when Marco and Star were just friends and Star was Marco's wingman to get with Jackie and then.... the writers just couldn't help themselves to make the two main characters get together because one's a boy and the other a girl
It went for at least 2 seasons with them just being platonic besties iirc
