DP: CP's a modest pig. He knew your heart from the beginning and he believed he could never be to you what I am. So he decided to sacrifice himself, because your happiness was more important to him than his own. (p.228)
DP: He understood why you did the those things. He was a Replacement, and Replacements, once Alivened, understand all about their owner from the very start. All that I know about you, he knows, and he's always loved you, just as much as I do. (p.228)
All along, Jack had thought that if only he found DP, he'd be happy again, but he didn't feel happy at all. Now, when it was too late, he realized he'd come to love CP, not instead of DP, but quite separately, for his brave and good self. (p.230)
DP: Jack-I don't understand-you wanted DP so much!
Jack: I thought I needed him. But you need me more. (p.254)
DP: "Losing is part of living. But some of us live even though we're lost. That's what love does. I'll always be here, on the Island of the Beloved, and when you hug the Christmas Pig, you'll be hugging me, too, because we're twins, Jack, and everything he feels, I feel, too." (p.234)
CP: "No. I told you. I have nothing left to lose, which makes a Thing brave. Eat me whenever you like. It doesn't matter to me anymore." (p.252)
Why is it better to have love and lost than to have never loved at all? Because you never felt so alive until then. It's the high, the rush, of having stolen the fire from the Gods. A single moment of glory followed by an eternal agony chained up a rock while birds feasted on your liver. Is it worth it?
Roughly 24 hours later, the corn moon called me up a little over 1 am today. I forgot to howl back so I ended up snoozing every hour until finally it was time to officially get up.
Thank you. For the first time in a very long time, she's not running away. Shiny happy people are like balloons; you gotta hold on 'em tight like you have been told when you were a kid.
