Ch. 9--This chapter is very eye-opening. Being a "straight ally" is controversial, just as being an ally of any group can be. I found that the author' explanation of how straight allies can just show support and get recognition was applicable to many other support groups.
Ch. 8--I thought it was very real of the author to explain how third-wave feminism is considered post-feminism by many people. Contemporary feminism is so amazing; it includes the acceptance of everyone, not just women. The work of feminism is far from over!
Ch. 5--Reading about Janice Raymond and her take on trans women receiving medical assistance was insane. Her saying that surgery is an act of rape is just a crazy claim; I can't even imagine her justification for it (not that there is any!)
Ch. 4--I found that the hair color example was very solid. Red hair is not considered a mishap in genetics, whereas intersex individuals are. It is the same for albinism. People think that it's "unfortunate" to be albino, but it's just what people deemed it to be. Super eye-opening!
Ch. 3--I found the section on the LGBTQ+ paradigm very interesting. Studying this paradigm through the lens of science is drastically different than just talking about it. For example, I've never heard anyone discuss how LGBTQ+ is a paradigm and is in crisis because it has an ongoing need to add identities.
Ch. 2--It wasn't shocking at all to learn that lesbianism was/is seen as a threat to male authority. Also, I completely disagree with D'Emilio...homosexuality isn't the result of capitalism. I felt like this explanation was definitely reaching.
Feminism is Queer ch. 1--I found the section on ancient Athens and Latin American men very interesting. It's crazy how across cultures, gay and lesbian is a label used so differently. I didn't realize how penetration is seen as such a dominant action to perform
The Hunting Ground--The universities' ignorance is incredibly upsetting to see in this documentary. So many administrators turned students away, just to uphold their reputation as a safe university. It's so aggravating to see how fraternities get away with so many sexual assault crimes just because the university wants to keep the frats for money!
Violence Against Black Trans Women--I've read about so many cases of trans people dying at the hands of aggressors who despise them just for living their truth. The amount of violence against black trans women is insane, and I wish it was discussed more. This is probably the first article targeting such an important group of women that I've read in a class.
Normalizing sexual violence--Reading this study was actually terrifying. These extremely young girls were assaulted, and they fully believed that it was normal and "just what boys do." These girls were violated and blamed themselves for it, which is extremely sad.
