I really like how the timelines work. It does seem backward I guess, but I think it's because English-speakers read left to right.

That makes sense. I'm sure somebody figured it all out and opted for this direction. Your idea sounds like the most likely reason to me.

The timelines are very cool here once you figure out how to use them
