RC = free copy that will expire after a time of what they hope will be the commercial version, final stage after beta testing before it goes

on sale. In the case of W7 they have given it a very long life - it won't expire until next June.

VM = a simulation of a PC running in its own protected space so you can try out new programs or operating systems without risk to your

current set up. I also use one to run an old copy of Windows for those applications that don't work on more modern systems

OSX is a version of BSD isn't it? So would that be Wine? If so it'll run Windows apps but not OSs - or is this something I don't know?

that's a new one on me - does it also work in Linux? I currently use Wine for some Windows stuff in Kubuntu

Actually I think OSX is Mac. John has an Apple

OSX = Operating System version 10 (Latin 10 = X) which the new BSD based Macs use

BSD = Berkeley Software Distribution, a variant on the Unix OS (Linux is also a Unix variant)
