I've got other stuff to do today and Sunday but I am definitely keeping my eyes out for Deaf viewers' reactions to Itsuomi (hearing male love interest) being very tactile with Yuki (Dead female protagonist)
Because am I someone very uncomfortable with, say, Kei Okazaki being super tactile? Yeah
But I have definitely observed the tactile tendencies in Deaf culture including Japanese Deaf culture so I am wondering how that is interpreted
I gotta say the WILDEST little detail
Yuki is talking with her friend Rin
So this is JSL for eat. Like you're using chopsticks to eat out of a bowl. BUT
THANK GOD I FOUND A SOURCE
In more naturalistic JSL it is recommended to switch it to what you are eating! Like with a spoon, etc
And they're at a Western style burger cafe. So it shows that Rin is doing it with an approach that simultaneously IS more based on JSL than random gestures but ISN'T a full length natural JSL conversation
This is really fascinating to watch because although so far there is not much sign language conversation, they ARE talking slowly facing Yuki and writing stuff down. I would say a LOT more than A Silent Voice for example
YUKI IS SO CUTE WHEN SHE IS HAPPY!!! I REALLY RELATE TO HER!!!!!!!!!!
I found
this site which seems pretty freaking cool
I didn't see a detailed review of A Sign of Affection but they included it so they probably don't hate it. This is a website that tries to collect appearances of deaf characters in manga, by a deaf person
He even says "deaf characters including those with multiple disabilities. However other disabilities, I am not covering those on this website since I am deaf but do not have other disabilities, I feel people with the disabilities in question could cover it better"
YUKI'S VOICE ACTRESS SEEMS TO BE HEARING, I DO NOT LIKE THAT but it is very common in anime. PRAYER CIRCLE FOR DEAF ACTRESS IN THE DUB like with a silent voice
English Wikipedia: Sumire Morohoshi was born in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, in 1999. At the time of birth, the right side of her body was paralysed, but the paralysis was cured within a few months.
Japanese Wikipedia: in case she never recovered from her disability, her mother named her Sumire in hiragana (instead of kanji) so she could write it
I will say that Sumire is NOT impersonating the voice of a deaf person, instead Yuki does not voice at all and and Sumire is just narrating her inner thoughts. This was a lot easier in the manga format
I checked chapter 2 real quick to confirm and Yuki seems to prefer JSL and know it fully but Rin, her mom, etc do not know it
The way that Yuki is SO self conscious about whether to start writing to communicate in some social situation. It is very different for me but I relate to this SO MUCH. HUGGING HER!!!!
I managed to stop reading chapter 2 because the CONTEXT in which this was confirmed was SO EXCITING I was like holy shit I gotta stop reading and go back to the anime. But I'll be binging so hard once anime is done lol
If there's even enough for more than one season, kinda hard to tell
Deaf people are more tactile yeah
My question is more like, is it okay for this hearing guy to act that way towards someone he's just now meeting? Is he making an unreasonable assumption? And based on what I saw so far in the show nah I think he means well enough
So the thing that excited me so much was the introduction of Oushi lmao... This is so funny I love him I'm sorry
Basically he's your typical overprotective childhood friend but here that means that he learned a lot about sign language and Deaf culture growing up with Yuki and a lot of the concerns he has are about her specific circumstances
Seeing someone else fluently sign was SO exciting
what the hell is this shit lmao like I'm not saying this is wrong to think but did you miss the part where YUKI IS PRETTY SURE THAT ITSUOMI JUST CONSIDERS HER AN EXOTIC NOVELTY...
I don't like Oushi because he's "handsome or male", Jesus Christ
The art in this episode is really cute, they have a simplified style at times that isn't low budget
It seems they're easing into using Yuki's voice more as the show progresses, such as to narrate sign language conversations
I bet Emma is lesbian lmao...
I am still kinda confused exactly what kinds of emergencies Yuki's hearing aids are for
Though I'd definitely understand if she really did end up doing something unhelpful for herself
THIS ENORMOUS MORE STACK IS KILLING ME
I LOVE TRAVELING AND STUFF. WHEEZES
They did a yubikiri and it was very cute
I'm rooting for Yuki to hug him soon!
Episode 4 is absolutely killing me with the classic shoujosei trope of the two main love triangle guys talking competitively about the girl
but with the layer of them leaving her out even more easily because she is Deaf
Oushi doesn't want Itsuomi to grab her from behind without warning but Itsuomi said Yuki said it's okay if it's him LMAOOOOO
And Yuki starting to show her frustration and turn away from Oushi like HMPH even though then she can't see him lmao
The affectionate voice theme in this episode...
The simpler art moments continue to be so cute in this episode and I also wonder if it's to make room for the signing in the animation budget and if so I approve!!!!
I SAID WOOOOOO WHEN SHE ASKED FOR DINNER AND HE SAID NOT THAT THEN LET'S EAT AT MY HOUSE
HE KISSED HER HAND! YEAHHHHHHH
Okay going back to the beginning... This episode does show how Yuki does occasionally voice to a degree with her family, where her family member(s?) all do not sign. But she prefers not to at all anywhere else.
This isn't actually shown. But then she does give a quiet laugh in the present and then is very self conscious about it. Just FYI
The art style in this episode was once again SO CUTE
Like when Yuki imagines Itsuomi and Emma together, or at the scene near the end when Rin is all :3333
Emma is interesting because for once I feel like it makes sense to just have a genuinely "annoying" character and it isn't exaggerated as a trope or a misogynistic depiction that is disproportionate to the circumstances
She just has a crush and is being clingy. Though if you just don't like those vibes, that's valid
NOT ITSUOMI LOOKING AWAY THE EXACT MOMENT SHE SIGNS SUKI
Oushi doesn't have her contact??? Boy ... U gotta chill
YUKI LOOKS SO FUCKIN CUTE IN THIS SCENE WITH MIO
I am very curious about the authenticity of the experience here
The Oushi scene was really interesting
And then Itsuomi came back with a tan and THE GYUU/CHUU... overdoing it a bit
But I liked it... I hope that's okay
Respectfully... This episode is SO relatable to me as a disabled person... The constant rejection in interviews... She's so nervous to meet his friend but is reluctant to say her condition is why
I'm late with the next episode, it's almost time for the following one now
It was so cute. Emma in Shin's POV in the flashback is so beautiful and I love the music too.
Yuki being a bit on the sidelines with Itsy and Shin... ;;u;; I hope she's okay... Respectfully, this did seem authentic to me as something that happens sometimes
YUKI LIFTING HER LONG SKIRT AS SHE WALKS INTO THE LAKE. CUTE AS HELL
Episode 10 was so bizarrely gay
Episode 11 I'm so glad the long dresses are back
