Some of it is much better written than that, so I'm hoping I can chalk it up to "first book growing pains"

I think it gets better, I haven’t read them myself but I remember a friend dropping a warning about it being real cringe at first

it does get less cringey, he gets better about it

i think part of it is also that harry starts off with some REALLY old fashioned ideas about women and then gradually improves as he realizes that maybe perhaps he is a dick

honestly I don't like how Harry Dresden is a misogynistic turd so I won't read those books

(I like Jim Butcher's Cinder Spire steampunk series though!)

Book 3

He literally wrote book 1 as a writing assignment in college.

So when it reads like a hack, pulp, stereotype of a hardboiled detective novel, that was literally what he was writing just to get a grade. He fleshed it out enough to make it into a whole book and followed it up with a slightly better sequel in which he'd almost found the direction in which to extricate his head from his anus.

But it wasn't until book 3 that he truly started to pull that sucker out.

I say this as a fan who has read almost the entire run, and enjoyed most of them, if begrudgingly the early books. They get better. There are moments of head slap throughout. But I find that in pretty much all media I consume so ymmv.

Over all I enjoy the world around Harry and what the other characters he eventually brings into the fold come to offer to it. Hope that offers a different POV.

It does get better, the character gets better as the books go on. There's a lot of good stuff in them, but the first couple of books are....very rough around the edges.

Others have chimed in with what I'd say. I DO appreciate the audio books too, as they're read by James Marsters. You'd also really probably enjoy the roleplaying game books. (which I can kick your way sometime) if you get into the larger world.

I full recognize and acknowledge that the books do go pants on head crazy sometimes, but over all they are a fun ride. Take that as you will.

Also! do NOT watch the short run TV show and expect it to be anything more than...35% like the books.

Ahahaha yeah. I found the TV show fun but....only very loosely based on the source material

I enjoyed the show too for what it was.

I enjoy both the books and the show in different ways
