OK gang, I'mma gonna do it. I have been researching this medieval beading project/personal quest of mine for MONTHS, (maybe years?) and though I have had stops and starts, I am actually going through with it this time. I ordered the pigskin parchment, the red silk cloth and the silk thread to try and get as authentic as I can to the original art.
I found out the basic sizes of some of the original 13th and 14th century pieces and even the sizes of the beads used so I can create my piece to be as close to the originals as possible.
you're reminding me of those ladies who shrugged and recreated roman hairstyles with needle and thread in the face of historians who suggested the updos on statues and busts were physically impossible
The SCA around here doesn't really recognize beadwork as part part of their general embroidery skills - regular embroidery yes, beads as accompaniment, yes, but really no actual beadwork skills. And I am over here making beadwork replicas of mosaic jewelry and roman body chains. heh.
