Completely randomly declaring one of my elbows looks like it might be a bit discolored, and that that can be a sign of diabetes.

I have perfect glucose my entire life and also had discolored elbows for several years of my life....

It's entirely possible, it runs in the family, but why always this shit? Why do I have to spend my whole fucking life getting warnings to ensure I'm permanently terrified? Why do I get scrutinized and judged and policed and lectured 95% of the times I visit over food, weight, diet, exercise, illness?
Infychu

I was flopped on my stomach propped up on my elbows, yeah. Not that she wouldn't have found something different to home in on if I wasn't.
Infychu

Even when I was trying crazy hard to shed tons of weight years ago, the topic of choice was exercising to tighten my skin so it wouldn't be all flappy and wrinkly from lost weight.
I'm going to fight her

I can try to get tested for it whenever I eventually haul my ass to the doctor after ten billion years, but I'm so jaded I'm really feeling the "Even if it takes me, at least that would mean I wouldn't have to WORRY about it taking me anymore." vibes tonight

unless you are actually feeling unwell or exhibiting truly detrimental symptoms of diabetes, there is no reason to constantly hammer in on it or fuss excessively
dragillionaire
also? lots of people live with diabetes
dragillionaire
not to be dismissive of it, because it can cause other problems and it's not fun, but like. you would not instantly die if you developed diabetes
Infychu

Her vision is even MORE dog shit garbage tier than mine too, substantially so. So it feels like even more of a pointless scare, especially after it took her a second to figure out which one when I held both elbows out together to compare.
dragillionaire

and if you did develop it, you'd get medicated to keep it under control, and like millions of people you would adjust and be relatively fine.

I'm sure it's her way of caring but. perhaps she should consider caring a little less in these circumstances

She's fat and diabetic with complications, and has been basically my whole life, so I always hear about how I'll go blind and need both feet amputated and shit

Regarding foot care, I recommend DC Foot Doctor on youtube. He has a bunch of informative videos and also works with diabetic patients.

I'd be absolutely terrible, and you probably should not at all for one moment listen to me, or the notion of turning it back on her: "Since you brought up health concerns, your pupils don't look even, like one is more dilated than the other. Have you been to a doctor to check that out recently? It could be a sign of Quixote-itis or Magnetite poisoning!"

Though on second thought, he might be good to look at for totally unrelated reasons, actually (thinking) a lot of times my psoriatic arthritis flares ARE feet and ankles
Siv
I don't recall if he has any vids like that, but his general tips are moisturize, inspect the feet (especially if you have limited feeling!!) and other little tidbits. Also, he sometimes has patients do circulation tests in their legs and that can help determine risk factors for other foot issues in relation to a limited blood supply.
Siv
You won't just suddenly have to remove your feet. It generally has to start somewhere and if you catch it early enough there's stuff you can do about it to reverse/mitigate.

can confirm-one of my aunts for YEARS had diabetes and at no point was she at risk of losing her feet (to my knowledge) from it. she did end up dying due to related complications but it's a long story and the odds of anything like that happening to you or anyone else are VERY slim and there is time between developing the illness and it progressing to very

bad points during which things can be done to mitigate and improve one's health. and if you're in the pre-diabetes range, if you catch it it CAN be reversed; my other aunt managed that
Infychu

Shit like this is why I hardly ever look at medical stuff TBH. Even when it's interesting, I always risk getting into my own head like this. But even if the test ends up positive, I'll just deal with it until either it or one of my other ten billion health issues I've got a family history of kill me.
Infychu

It's probably gonna be one of them eventually, the question is just which, when, and how drawn out and miserable it'll end up being.
Infychu

I think my grandma either reversed it or just held it completely in check, too.

The ELBOWS? Knees and elbows are often darker because... we sit or lean on them.
Lala
Tell her the darkening skin she's thinking of is more observable in skin folds or looks like patches... also, depending on your race (especially if you're lighter skinned with darker skinned parents, etc.) darker lines, especially around places with more pignent, is normal.
Lala
Diabetes absolutely can have disastrous consequences, but that's mostly due to extremely bad compliance in terms of actually takkng medication and adjusting diet and lifestyle. I've seen waaay too many get end stage renal failure or diabetic foot, yeah, especially elders.
Lala
Socks off when you go to a diabetes clinic, diabetes damages the nerves, so it's hard to tell if there's an infected wound in the foot, etc.
Lala
Actual amputation of the foot, I've only ever heard as a possibility in this rural place I'm in where nearly everyone is in denial of having chronic conditions.
Lala
In the cities I did internship in, nah, diabetic foot at MOST led to having a bunch of tissue stripped off the foot after removing the necrotized tissue (which no longer felt anything due to neuropathy/nerve damage.) Cleaning and letting the wound heal. Exposed to air, too!
Lala
And yes, prediabetes is very reversible with a healthy lifestyle! And no, you don't suddenly go from "hyperpigmention due to insulin resistance" to "lop off a foot," she has leapt several stages. ^^;;;
Lala
You need more than a single symptom, also. To reassure yourself, if it's still getting in your head, you can blood tests at a hospital, like an eight hour fasting blood glucose level.
Lala
Also, there are very promising treatments now to effectively re-stimulate the pancreas to produce insulin, so we may soon see the end of type 1/insulin dependant diabetes!!!
I am sorry we have the same mother, christ. I hate the "it comes from a place of concern" rhetoric too because guess what at 70lbs lighter I still had all the same medical issues and felt no difference so maybe. maybe it isn't just my weight! or maybe my weight is a byproduct of another medical condition instead of it being the thing to cause issues!!!
Infychu

God we seriously do have fucking identical moms I swear
Infychu

Realistically I know all this shit, if not in nearly as much detail as y'all do. She's just been balls to the wall insane my whole fucking life, and has made it my problem with this concern trolling fearmongering bullshit that whole time too.
Infychu
My medical issues have ALWAYS been the same no matter what my weight is, too. But also. I have psoriasis?? An autoimmune condition IMFAMOUS for fucking your skin up and making it look weird?? Granted I don't THINK I have it on my arms, but my skin looking a little gnarly should probably
still be expected.
Infychu
I wouldn't be surprised if THAT got me before diabetic shit ever did TBH. You can control diabetes so that the complications don't happen, but something degenerative like that will EVENTUALLY progress no matter what.
Infychu
Also WTF that's so cool?? I had no idea they were that far along on experimental treatments.
Lala
Yup!! I learned it from a medscape article, the patients treated with it have successfully been taken off insulin, they no longer need injections! ;3;
Infychu

Lala

Also, oof, I also have autoimmune issues, I've got eczema and Ehlers-Danlos...
Lala
Last doc I went to tried to blame my weight, even though I explained my weight fluctuates very easily and my condition has nothing to do with that, it's a genetic issue causing faulty collagen--I got my injury falling while running, sob.
Lala
( I just also stress eat, when I'm calm and relaxed, I lose weight, ffff. )
Lala
Also recently realized I also have sodium hunger and eat more if I'm not getting enough salt??? I have low bp naturally, and it can make me dizzy and weak since I hate adding salt to anything and don't normally cook with it, oops.
Lala
Too many doctors default to "weight???"
Infychu
They seriously do, ugh. Sorry you gotta deal with that and autoimmune shit too
Lala
I don't have to deal with fatphobia often and to his credit, the doctor did acknowledge the emotional source of the eating (before I also realized there was another nutritional deficiency causing me to not feel full), although it was kind of well-intentioned, but unrealistic advice, like improve your social situation, ffff, so I'm not lonely/isolated.
Lala
(I cannot just go out and make more friends, sir, I'm awkward and autistic and do not generally have close friendships, so living away from home is like ~welcome to social isolation.~)

like we all know that being an ideal weight is easier on the joints and heart etc. but.... we know. and it's not the be all end all. and the fat phobia prevalent in the medical field is incredible. in a bad way.
Infychu
All this ^
me, looking at my recent results with abysmally low sodium by default, looking at that content about being hungry forever... that explains why I'm finally full lately since I've been defaulting to just adding more salt to my meals now that I know
also yeah, fat phobia is wild, I've literally had a doctor tell me "oh idk if you have pcos, have you tried eating more strawberries"
Lala
Yep! I'm sorry you didn't learn it, but yeah, I only recently found out too... ;O; I've been like this a while, I typically only went for the salt if my body literally became too weak to get up and just. Was basically a lethargic lump that cannot get up.
Lala
(PCOS can be improved by avoiding high glycemic food, medium and low are fine, I tend to avoid sugar during the cycle because it spikes up the pain amazingly. I could be nearly pain free until I eat and THEN....... SUFFERING, and it was so hard to find anything online about this??? Like why pain when I eat??? But the strawberries, I'm so. Confused.)
Lala
Why strawberries.......
Lala
(I've heard raspberries are good for the PH balance of the vagina, but the strawberries thing is ??? ? ? new to me, what... did he say the strawberries were even supposed to do?
Lala
( Or she, oops, didn't realize there wasn't any indication.)
oof szgkvfu yeah I lean toward salt so I never really thought about it, I was just like "oh no I'm eating a lot of high sodium food I know this is supposed to be bad" but no, I just. needed it. and I think she was just trying to like, suggest I eat more fruits? which is made wilder by the fact that she didn't ask me about my diet
Lala
Oops. xD;;;; I guess she just assumed, huh...
yeah, because it couldn't be a medical condition I have basically every marker for including the excess body hair
but yeah!! fat phobia, man.

8S yeah salt is an essential nutrient; your average person processes sodium normally and so the amount of sodium in typical american processed food is Too Much. but if you have low blood pressure, or chronic dehydration, or you sweat a lot or [hey wow the list is actually really long], you need more salt on average
Bad Vibes Only
I straight up take gram salt tablets because of a combination of medication and conditions
Lala
Yup, I always heard we had enough salt in food naturally, so I was used to never cooking with salt and never adding salt to anything and yes!! I am someone who gets dehydrated SUPER fast, like my vision goes bad, I get dull pounding headaches every time I move my head, my tongue is... sticking to the roof of my mouth and is dry right now, lemme go drink.

But yeah, BP is on the low end of normal. Scared some nurses while doing some kind of occupational fitness "Why is your blood pressure so low?!" both numbers were in the double digits... ^^;;; My systolic was something like 90. My diastolic is often a bordering 60 or below. https://images.plurk.com/3vD7miZpGNz4HUeQKWQKEi.jpg

I don't recall even getting taught much of this in medical school, I think it's because we really are often taught just the average and not to be concerned too much with the outliers, unfortunately... that means you get a lot of doctors unprepared for the people who really are outliers. The phrase used in medical school:
Lala
"Doctors are taught 'when you hear hoofbeats, think horses not zebras,' meaning a doctor should first think about what is a more common—and potentially more likely—diagnosis."
Lala
...... that's actually why EDS has a zebra as its symbol. We're the outliers. ^^;;;

But yeah, that's why you'll have so many doctors really have no idea how to deal with autoimmune stuff, whenever doctors can't figure out the cause of something and label it idiopathic, that literally means "we don't know." A clever ER, I believe, doctor told me in med school that basically means it's usually autoimmune.
