Because if Texas goes deeper into Dystopian Fascist Hellscape territory, there's apparently a very real possibility my family may uproot and move en masse
And it sounds like that's the candidate currently being considered
Though the southwest does sound like it's having issues getting enough water...
dad's family is from New Mexico, and Grandma still lives there, I can probably help with at least some things
Yeah, I've heard that's the case too
That's cool
It's still too early to say if anything is even actually going to happen, but knowing a little about which areas are decent may be helpful.
so New Mexico is kind of like Texas when it comes to population clusters, there's like two big cities, Santa Fe and Albuquerque, and everything else is significantly smaller and spread out
there's also a significant amount of land that's tribe land, which is going to effect what can be built there
I seeeee
So some smaller place outside one of those two big ones is probably best
oh, and a good chunk of New Mexico is high elevation and in the mountains, so there's highways that you can't always get through if the weather is bad or there's a rock slide
Tucumcari is a small town on I-40 that we end up stopping at on road trips for food, and there's gates around there that get closed if the weather's bad
Ooooh that's good to think about.
Houston is REALLY close to sea level, that could be a rough adjustment for them.
Albuquerque is pretty much in the center of the state, with I-40 going through it east-west and I-25 going north-south, there's a lot of smaller cities/town along I-25 especially
oh, and a lot of houses use swamp coolers for summer cooling systems, not AC
I've never even HEARD of those.
EVERYONE uses AC around here.
doesn't surprise me, swamp coolers work by introducing more water to the air to absorb heat, which isn't all that helpful if there's already a lot of water in the air
but a lot of New Mexico is desert or desert adjacent, so it's more useful there then by the coast
LMAO yeah it can get DISGUSTINGLY humid here
I have definitely experienced more than a few days of 100% humidity but no rain
yeah, taking advantage of evaporation to cool thinks down doesn't work if there's no roam for the water in the air xD
I know nothing about NM aside from trivial things about Los Alamos and that I sat in a plane on the tarmac at Albuquerque and it was hot as heck but still not as bad as Phoenix but I'm curious since this is being discussed: what are the vibes (politically, socially, culturally, etc) of the two major cities mentioned?
well when we went to see my Grandma two christmas's back they were strictly enforcing mask wearing in all public and government buildings, so
also, if you're trying to be anti indigenous or anti hispanic to any major degree there good fucking luck, because the tribes are very active politically and half the population is hispanic and/or latino
Oh hi I'm also thinking about NM
there is a homeless problem, but where isn't there one in this capitalist hellscape, but unlike some places that think the bootstrap mentality is a viable strategy, there has been an attempt at building some areas with mini houses for especially homeless vets to live
it didn't work well, but that's more because homeless vets with ptsd generally aren't thrilled with having strangers manage when and where they come and go
Yeah, that's understandable. War trauma is a hell of a drug.
