I did think John Winchester hurt Dean in certain ways when the Winchester bros growing up. But I don't think he would shame Dean for unnecessary things.

He might put the responsibility taking care of Sam on Dean and snap at him when Sam is hurt because Dean is not taking diligent care of Sam. He might beat Dean for that, but I don't see him blaming Dean for some nature stuff, like growing hair or some sort.
I was mad at his A+ parenting, and potentially homophobic (which I think it's true and hinted at in his diary), but sometimes fans are a little bit too crazy about that.
