My oldest and I decided to try and watch all the studio Ghibli films awhile back (they are on HBO) and we're down to the last three. We started Only Yesterday tonight, and I can't get into it at all. It has 100/80 % on rotten tomatoes and I don't get it. It's fine, and there are lovely moments
and the animation is absolutely breathtakingly beautiful, and even better than Ghibli usual, which is saying something. But the story is just about a kid getting casually mistreated by all sorts of folks, growing up to be a woman who gets casually mistreated by all sorts of folks. It's depressing
For the record, From Up on Poppy Hill was the best of the ones I didn't know about. And Pom Poko was pretty good too. My favorite will always be Howl's Moving Castle, followed by Spirited away.
Howl's Moving Castle was amazing. I haven't checked out the others, but I'll give From Up on Poppy Hill a watch... it looks like something Mrs. GingoGumbo would like. Thanks!
