Bull shit is what I got myself into. I mean the dancing and the stories, the performances, the artistry was beautiful and enjoyable.
But much like surprise corn in my food I was not expecting the religious/evangelical propaganda from something that was advertising itself as preserving Chinese culture and tradition.
When I got the program I should have known something was off when it was advertising the Epoch Times.
Illuminaughtii on yt has a really good video on them iirc
omg was there actual propaganda in the show? i know shen yun itself is culty but i didn't know it was like that onstage
I need to see that video. My sister just got me tickets because she thought I would like it and I didn't really look into it, I just shrugged, and I was like...sure. Then I got there and I was like...wtf did I walk into.
Oh hell yeah there was propaganda in the show lol.
There was one performance called Unprecedented Crime that talks about how Falun Dafa was persecuted by communist China. I heard Falun Dafa and my eyes just bugged out, like wtf is this personality cult bs that I walked into.
The next performance after that was a singer singing Returning to the Heaven Sacred. The Lyrics, I shit you not:
The world troubles test the soul / but the divine shall deliver those who are good /godlessness is but a modern frame of mind / atheism and evolution are doctrines that deceive
most live on this earth from heaven hail / the universe was crumbling in its latter days / now the creator is forging the heavens anew /he comes at last to the world
I could not believe this shit especially since they were peppering this is along with a lot of amazing Chinese stories.
There was another song Dafa Leads Back to Heaven:
As tho' in a lone canoe we go through life / In times of serenity we float free of worries / Yet in turbulence we float free of waves / The end never in sight no shore to be found / most lives from heaven hail
though the mission is forgot / our divinity is prisoner to doctrine / of atheism and evolution / keep good and kind resisting the wayward trends
This show really had a thing for atheists and evolution. Needless to say I was shooketh.
If I had known that this was perpetuating Falun Dafa I would have given my sister her money back.
It is racist as fuck. There are different heavens for different races and bi-racial children don't go to heaven (not a problem if you are an atheist) and interracial marriage is degeneracy.
I swear when some of the above bullshit started popping off there were people who were Chinese sitting down the row from me angry whispering.
And I'm just like I can't believe I came to Dallas for this shit. I'm having an upset.
Now I'm just like...I want my money back on the popcorn, water, t-shirts, and parking. I guess I can use the t-shirts for dirty work.
Thank fuck I didn't buy a cashmere scarf like the lady beside me did, no way am I forking almost $200 over for your appropriation of your Journey to the West.
No worries I found it immediately and everything they said gave me the exact vibes I felt.
False/misleading advertisement that tries to separate themselves from the dark underbelly and when you get there that's when the red flags start flying.
I felt every bit of it and I'm just like...I wasted my day on this when I could have been at Kinokuniya or Daiso or stuffing my face with Korean BBQ or Ramen.
Dallas ain't worth it and neither were their cramped Spirit Airlines seating.
