it was kind of a big deal since the author sought to copyright it. Which it was for a time. But apparently not anymore
the ruling was that copyrightable material requires 'human authorship'.
so I was like, ok, so what does this comic even look like? What kinda shit is AI doing that it'll put me out of a job?
so I went looking... and it's fucking hilarious
it's Zendaya. (apparently she was in the search parameters.. like duh)
Ari

closeups only
it's just... dead eyed blank faced expressionless zendaya
freckledknight: hahah yeah, static poses, no hands, not doing fucking anything
no movement, so real interaction with any of the surroundings
if she DID have hands she'd probably have like 9 fingers
i kinda did a side by side with my own shit
also not consistent from panel to panel because AI is very bad at that
and i think this is one of my more boring pages cuz it's just some chatting
talking heads.. but goddamn there's way more storytelling going on here then whatever the fuck this AI comic is doing
honestly their background structures don't even have consistency between styles
and yeah. you have... mutliple people... interacting together...
WOW look at you fancy pants
yeah for me the thing about AI art is like. okay eventually it will probably be able to render hands and be more consistent, but
god I wish like, the model of AI art that had taken off had been like, the AARON programs and not...this shit. (bc AARON had been designed/programmed by an artist)
FUNDAMENTALLY you are usually making art to tell a story or otherwise communicate something
and unless you somehow communicate to the AI exactly the thing you want to communicate including expressions and style and lighting and composition it's not going to be able to produce those things specifically
not because it's not good enough but just because it doesn't know! it's not reading your mind!
and it turns out, the reason art exists, is that it's very hard to just describe all of those things
yeah computer can't fill in the gaps or make creative decisions
yeah, no storytelling, character interaction, just anatomy in egenral, compostion... all the things really
... it's just... it's so dumb
visual art exists because words do not communicate everything so you cannot just use words to communicate to the AI and come up with what you want
vectorspace: I think a lot of wannabe artists/designers forget the "visual communication" part of the equation
like, the very first AI art program was a series of programs designed by an artist who had an interest in the intersection of AI and art, taught on his own work, and wasn't open-source. it also couldn't be exploited for capitalism, so it fell to dust after the creator died
heavensblessing: yeah, i think that's the thing. Like, the main thing that keeps getting lost is that most artists are mad about the stolen art in datasets
and the obvious attempt at moneygrab with said stolen art
[stares balefully at Tor Books and the SF Ballet]
This looks exactly like the lifeless samey bullshit you'd expect people with no taste would be busy wanking themselves over for having achieved
I'm so glad copyright law was not on their side
But also yes, thank goodness they got smacked down
