I've been batting around the idea of a magic school dressing room game with the occasional 1-2 week murdergame event mixed in with more typical events. Does this intrigue?

Oh, cool!

By "murdergame event," so you mean events are treated like they are in murdergames (there are scheduled days for something to come up and surprise the players and characters, who spend the rest of the week dealing with that thing, and another scheduled day for the event climax, just like with motives and trials)? Or something else?

it's a normal game except every so often someone gets murdered

It is the marriage of my idea that I'd like dressing rooms to have a revival and also the idea I'd like a situation for murder game Cr to continue, maybe also have it be a thing where people can run their own murder within the setting context if they run it by me as kind of a way for people to try it out
🏔️ndrusi

I'm intrigued, yes
Kiramas ❄️
But yeah the basic concept is it'd be like an app free/ac free magic school jamjar, then the school has an enemy who sometimes kidnaps a few students to murdergame
Kiramas ❄️
Considering the idea of reserve priority given to people who frequent the DR so there's that incentive to stay active, but not sure whether it's a good idea or not since I do want the murder aspect to be open to all
Awe

huh
Kiramas ❄️

Also wondering if this existed, if people would prefer it to be a classic jamjar, or maybe an AU game? Or a combination of both like via memory loss aspects
Kiramas ❄️

To clarify "murdergame event" is basically like. It's a regular Dr. Then when I or someone else feels like putting on a MG in there, we have sign ups like normal MG on the general ooc comm, but it's considered an "event" within the wider context of the DR. Basically there's continuity
Kiramas ❄️
I would probably devise several concepts of these mini MG rounds before setting the whole thing up so there's a good chunk ready to go. But they would all be mini rounds the length of a mock trial, since the idea is to scratch the murder itch frequently over time
Kiramas ❄️
And then build up CR around more typical events in the meantime
Kiramas ❄️
And those could also be player run if someone is just like, "hey I want a memshare event". The magic school setting is basically there to enable whatever kind of bullshit people wanna do
Kiramas ❄️
That's not to say I wouldn't be supplying events myself. Just that this is the level of freedom I've enjoyed as a player in other DR-but-with-continuity games
Thx everybody!

can one opt out of the murdergame parts? I lack the energy for such chaos x.x

Yeah definitely if you just wanna play in the DR portion that'd be an option!
Kiramas ❄️
You just don't sign up for the murder
Kiramas ❄️
Then your char didn't get taken
Kiramas ❄️
It does mean you'd be making your own fun for that week while I'm busy running the event, but that's another reason why they will always be short
Kiramas ❄️
And/or maybe I can come up with a good sub event that people still at the school can run with while those are going on
thaneon

I'm not interested in the murdergame part, but I am interested in the magical school DR part
Kiramas ❄️

understandable given our shared fandom experiences!!

I could maybe do both, depending... if I can remember to tag
Kiramas ❄️

If I did get an overwhelming response for a pure magical DR I would still consider that a win, since I want DRs to revive lol
Kiramas ❄️

But I think since MGs are in such high demand this makes sense as an experiment

seconding aviekokyre here, magic school sounds cool but I have less than zero interest in MGs
thaneon
From what I hear of MGs, I wouldn't have the energy or time to keep up
Kiramas ❄️
For sure, they're definitely not for everyone so there would never be pressure to join in on one, that's not good for the game anyway to sign up people who can't play
Kiramas ❄️
And on the opposite end, MGs are usually so intensive that the people who frequent them can't make it work in a long term game. And I've always thought a dressing room revival would be a good niche to fill that type of gap
Kiramas ❄️
Since it's understood you can come and go as you please
Kiramas ❄️

Back when it was first taking off as a genre of game, I had a DR that I played in concurrently, and that was really the sweet spot for me. I was so sad when it closed down
Thx everybody!
also, what kind of magical school are we talking here? Like, are we talking college or would we have to age down characters to their teens? I feel like I'm asking a lot of questions for a DR I'm sorry
Makimerry🤶
Which would be especially nice because as someone who can't hack long term games anymore, I miss the people who quite reasonably don't ever play in MGs...!
Kiramas ❄️
I'd say it's a college especially if it winds up being a murdergame. But itd probably be a combination dealie where older teens can apply too. Maybe like an adjacent campuses situation
Kiramas ❄️
But I think since its a magic school specifically, there is no reason that people from any (adult-ish) age couldn't apply. Since magic isn't exactly a general education. If someone wants to go back to college at age 40, they'll let em

What Lenga said though, I also miss my non-MG friends haha!

Kiramas ❄️
Oh, to clarify, when I say "adjacent campuses" what I mean is like. Characters are all basically on the same level of magic learning so high schoolers and adults are in the same magic classes....
Kiramas ❄️
But then there's also a normie high school the teens go to for learning regular high school things (which the adults don't have to do cuz they finished their education)

Like the people in Vocaloidressing eventually decided, "it is in a city. There is a bus. Such and such character has a laboratory." Etc etc

Okay but if someone dies in the mg section... What happens? Do they just wake up back in school with a penalty or what
It Nyanka
Do they just haunt the school as ghosts?
Kiramas ❄️
I was thinking haunting as ghosts yeah! They can also get revived with a penalty (probably memloss would best match what I have in mind, but if people hate that I could consider more options)
Kiramas ❄️
letting them stay ghost permanently would also be very Murdergame Consequence and I would be more than amenable to this hahaha
Kiramas ❄️
It would be nice to have it be like that to set it apart from normal jamjars' death premises
Kiramas ❄️
Or running with the idea of a concurrent event to the murder, the peeps still in the DR side have to do something to earn revivals?
Kiramas ❄️
That could go hilariously badly tho
Kiramas ❄️
well for now I will probably make it the haunting / penalty revival situation I first mentioned since the main priority in a DR is convenience (while for IC standards death should still be at least somewhat inconvenient)
Kiramas ❄️
and it looks like this idea has decent enough support sooo, I will look into further developing the concepts behind it and probably do a formal interest check later with regards to the MG aspect, and if that doesn't look like a success then I can just launch it as a sandbox and see how it goes

one question: can a canonically dead adult be brought in as ghost faculty, yes or no
Kiramas ❄️
this definitely sounds like the kind of shit people could just do without asking on basis of it being a DR lol
Kiramas ❄️
although it does kinda make me wonder once again if what people want is an AU game lol you're the second person to ask about being faculty, so if jamjar I will need to put some thought into how that works
Kiramas ❄️
though I suppose it could always be like. Both. you can be an OG or a setting native AU, why, because it's a DR
Kiramas ❄️
not that it has to be both
Kiramas ❄️
I can definitely come up with a reason for jamjar faculty
Dragons Dragons
Yeah, it does sound like a good place to play around in, though I'm not sure the genres mix well. I mean, a big part of murdergames' appeal is telling a story in a short amount of time and then getting the safe happy ending, which doesn't seem like it would mix; the SOL as backdrop would feel fake and the catharsis and wrapup wouldn't be there if they can be
Dragons Dragons
Dragged back into the game at any moment. How would the DR deal with that?
Makimerry🤶
I do think it's possible that maybe the tone combination would be totally unappealing in that respect. But isn't a better comparison, a multi-round murdergame where the characters spend several months in survivorland and deadland?
Dragons Dragons
That's true, though even then it's always working towards an end, which long-term games and especially DRs don't, really.
Makimerry🤶
Oh, going with something that was said earlier regarding the possibility "Or running with the idea of a concurrent event to the murder, the peeps still in the DR side have to do something to earn revivals"
What if characters are guaranteed* to come back as ghosts but then the characters have to do something to earn them a physical body!!
Makimerry🤶
* Calling it a literal guarantee that they would come back is probably a bit much but it could be more like a "virtual guarantee" based on an attainable minimum amount of success.
Doctor Ansem
Seems more like you'd want a system to where a DR and a "murdergame-esque" event could exist concurrently?
Doctor Ansem
Maybe the "murdergame events" are tied to a promotion, regain, or some valuable resource (since signing up is based on activity, I think?) you earn upon winning in some way (getting rid of the competition or stopping the 'mastermind')
Doctor Ansem
With death being more of a (maybe goofy) setback instead of getting kicked out the game. Like someone said above me, you have to get your body back before you can go at the promotion/murdergame again.
Kiramas ❄️
Rewarding participants with a regain in the DR is a good idea given the shortness of the murdergame event, and the revival ideas here are pretty workable. As for the murdergame events and their effect on the tone, the way I picture it going is like
Kiramas ❄️
Kind of in a sailor moon villains way ex: Archvillain Monomagius has a team of murdergame masterminds that he is deploying one at a time to pester the school, and whenever one is defeated, it's assumed to keep Monomagius at bay and hurt him for a while, so maybe once all the mms are defeated he will get dead.
Kiramas ❄️
But instead of a "villain of the week", it's a " villain of Des thinks it has been too long since theres been a murdergame in the overarching murdergame sphere so here ya go. " from the perspective of the chars it isn't a relentless onslaught
Kiramas ❄️
They can easily imagine they held him back for however long it is between mg parts and feel sort of okay about it
Kiramas ❄️
I want them to be reasonably self contained as a result of having a different MM/Kidnap Setting, so it's easier to get involved if you are entering the DR because of the MG instead of the other way round
Kiramas ❄️
As well as making it an easy template to adapt whatever MG ideas someone may have to the setting
Kiramas ❄️
I highly doubt we would wind up with a rotation of other people who want to guest-run making the DR overly murderous, but in the unlikely event that happened, I would probably ask if they wanted to make a spin-off game laughs
Kiramas ❄️
I also thought, like... calling the school itself a "Slice of Life" didn't sound exactly correct to me. I don't think it would be all sugar and rainbows, some events can have that vibe like "oops potions accident now half of you are kittens teehee!"
Kiramas ❄️
But I also think once announced it would be cool to lead up to an upcoming MG with somewhat more spooky events so people are like "oh the evil is reawakening, maybe some of us should volunteer as tribute!!" (Priority Reserve)
Kiramas ❄️
And so people who are only here for magic fun can still get in on some spicy fun
Kiramas ❄️
But yea when I said "frequently over time" that might have been a little misleading, I didn't really mean there would be a new MG event every month or something, that would be so much work haha
Kiramas ❄️
Having a bunch prepped in advance would be more for easy deployment whenever the time seems ripe
Kiramas ❄️
Anyway, another thing to consider is that like, a DR both is and isn't a long term game, ya know? The main difference is that you can play as many chars you want, for as much or as little as you like apiece
Kiramas ❄️
So if you want to engage with this by sending a new character to each MG the way you normally would, and then they each just stay kickin around with their CR and never have to murder again while you keep picking up new shinies, that would be valid
Kiramas ❄️
It is definitely not mandatory to just play one dude in the DR and make them go through eleven murdergames
Kiramas ❄️
Cuz...it's a DR!
Kiramas ❄️
But if someone does want to do that, it's also great and valid lol
thaneon
Okay, that just made me picture a Zagreus going "Time to die again! 8D"
Kiramas ❄️

thaneon

Everyone goes "Well, the murderer will never be them because they die every time"
Kiramas ❄️

Mobile plurk was hiding Avie from me but "person who dies every time" as a trope that could only exist in this particular type of MG is hilarious

Lots of room to have fun with it if you don't want to go for the big drama of an MG. Possibly also being able to bridge the two sides as a "Don't go over to that building. It's cursed again, and I died again. So about tomorrow's history test..."

Yep being interested in mainly the DR is legit, seems that's at least half the people in here, much to consider. And don't worry about it Jisu! Like none of this is final anyway because I'm firmly in the spitballing phase at the moment, but if it turns out our visions would not align I still appreciate the well wishes
