And theoretically some ghosts of Tarnished and their companions could come cause him trouble 
as it happens, the ravens that live in gaze are deeply sassy to jod, so he can strike up a convo on the crow prompt!

given that Varré arrived with the start of the TDM and theoretically could have planted the roses the same day, they've been growing for two or three weeks in a constant Soothing Blood Mist (tm)
so while they won't be blooming yet, they'll probably be growing with some unnatural vigor
excellent, that makes sense why he might not quite recognize them too from the memory

If the roses were solidly attached to the handle, I'd consider it more plausible, but no. There are actual stems in there.
It might all be steel, but it just makes me think that if you actually constructed it, any time you hit something you'd get this horrible crashing noise as all of the roses smacked into each other
