anyway nocturnal animals on netflix is interesting so far

wow so this movie is doing the story-within-a-story thing and it is a good thing jake gyllenhaal is in the fictional fiction bc otherwise the fact that he is fuckin ripped would seriously kill my suspension of disbelief when it comes to his character being totally helpless

but he's playing the protagonist of a novel that the movie's protagonist is reading so it's fine

actually i'm beginning to suspect he's based on her

i assumed he was based on her ex who wrote the novel but perhaps not

oh, this is interesting - there's a quick shot of the novel that i paused on, and its depiction of the protag and cops finding his dead family does not at all match what we just saw onscreen - in the book he loses his shit, but in the movie playing out what amy adams is reading, he just drops to his knees and asks blankly if his wife is all right

idk if this is a prop thing/changed screenplay thing or if it's deliberate, but it is very interesting

oh okay the wife is based on susan. i can tell from the way she's having a flashback with gyllenhaal playing her ex and the actress from the book playing her

. . . or maybe that is amy adams, idk, they did a fantastic job casting an actress who resembles her and it is fucking real bad with my difficulty with faces

imdb tells me this movie is . . . based on a book . . . maybe that's the novel we saw?

no i think that is her, but it's interesting that gyllenhaal is playing her ex in the flashback. the actual ex doesn't even show up, if i'm interpreting imdb's credits correctly

love how this movie is playing with layers of storytelling to show us her state of mind

idk, i still think tony is based in part on susan. the movie is presenting too many parallels in their actions to be ignored

i was going to snark on the movie for its extremely subtle use of a painting that says REVENGE in giant white letters on a black background, but then it got me with a very good jump scare, so it wins this round

FINALLY a character in something i'm watching wants a damn lawyer after the cops pick him up

A perfect exchange:

"I got lung cancer. It's metastasized."

"But you smoke all the time."

"Yeah, that's how it works."

okay, something is happening with this conversation. it's a very important one in the book, but tony keeps returning to the cancer out of nowhere. "when did you tell me you were sick?" just a few lines after the above exchange, and a bit later, with certainty, "you never told me about the cancer."

so supposedly the ex sent susan this proof before the book is to be published, with a note asking to meet up and saying he wanted her to be the first to read it

but now i think tony is definitely based on her (which we're supposed to at the point; there was another flashback with her telling him to stop writing about himself) and the ex died of cancer at some point after she left him for her current husband

and she is Not Okay

well. i'm not one hundred percent on him being dead - she does get an email from him - but either way he does not turn up for the dinner they were supposed to get

and then, appropriately, it ends

it ends on him not showing up for dinner?

yep. again, it makes sense in context

there is a shit ton of stuff i didn't get into. it's a really good movie, though, and worth watching for sure

the movie lays it all out pretty clearly, it's not hard to follow. i got caught up more in following the parallels and trying to figure out the backstory as it unfolded a little at a time
