I mean even back then many people were tired of the Jaune arc
But that having been said, I suddenly remembered that the joke about Scarlet's weapon was because they'd been teasing THEIR FORUMS about it for a year while people wailed at them about being mean
So you know, if you're coming into this as someone NOT active on the site and/or following Miles's official blog on there, the joke does come out of nowhere
During previous watchings of this vid I did wonder why that didn't bother me more
But it's one of those...I was there, so that joke made sense to me
I remember shotgunning whatever was released of RWBY at one point, I think it was only the first... two... seasons or w/e? But I think I came to basically the same conclusion, in that it seemed like it could be interesting but wasn't there yet
And apparently it just proceeded to never get there
It really needed an experienced story lead. at least.
But I think it was...only season 3 or so (or at least after season 2) that they realized HOW MUCH explaining they needed to do because they were coming from fanwork. They hadn't written an original series before.
But ON TOP of that, I think it took a while because 1) they were used to feeding fans info directly, through twitter/blogs/interviews (which again, worked because this was extra info, not basic stuff) and 2) because they interacted with the core fandom so much, they mostly interacted with people who would SEE these extra explanations
so the whole Velvet thing, for example, didn't need to be explained as far as they were concerned, because the people they were making the show for all knew about and wanted to know what her weapon was
This isn't a defense of the flaws btw
RWBY is a show that makes me sad for all the lost potential
Remembering how insular early fandom was, it makes sense.
it's interesting extra context to me, but definitely doesn't read as a defense of the show
I think Monty dying when he did also threw a wrench into things, too
Because then they had to scramble to fill in the blanks while making a show.
And everything that went on with. A certain VA. Probably also didn't help.
no, I would assume that did not help >.>
what happened with the VA?
He had been sexually harassing fans and coworkers for years
...tho on another note re: how insular fandom was, I remember Miles Luna being a whiny baby about criticism
Not that people weren't being dicks to him at times
but some people were being blunt
and some weren't being rude at all
and he used some people's rudeness as an excuse to go LALALA YOU'RE ALL HATERS
Oh no I mean the other VA problem
Not just Vic he was later
Roman's VA who went on to make a show that caused other behind-the-scenes drama.
...They really just could not catch a break could they
...Have they seriously not had a break until recently?
mmm...I think they haven't
I think part of what annoys me too is that I legitimately like a lot of the character designs
and then they're used for... this
Christ no wonder dev suffers
You know, when I was showing my ex-boyfriend RvB I ended up showing him the RWBY trailers
His pronouncement was that Monty was a hack
I mean he's free to be objectively wrong
I think I can sort of see where that opinion might come from. There's a sort of... chuuni vibe to some of Monty's stuff I think? But on the other hand, it really gets you feeling hyped up as well.
RWBY is a junk food show. It exists for the sheer fun of it.
And sometimes that's exactly what I want.
They never expected RWBY to take off as it did, let alone find reach beyond the immediate roosterteeth audience. And you can tell in how they had to scramble.
Plus they never had a solid written bible until after Monty’s passing -- because it was his pet project and he was deferred to overall.
I do think people don’t take into account how hard they leaned on Poser and how tiny their team was at the start tho.
Yeah, they really only expected that hardcore RT fans would be into it and that's who it was directed at
and then...that wasn't the case
It does feel like they're finally finding their footing after Monty
