I don't play any characters with canon voices rn and I also don't really think about it, so this meme is difficult.

I am 100% sure I could make something up for the meme but would I remember it three weeks later when I need to describe a characters voice? No.

Natasha has a couple videogame/cartoon voice actors and the like but a lot of them have ridiculous Russian accents, which I guess make sense if you need to signal that a character is Russian where screentime is limited, but don't make sense for a character that is supposed to be the ultimate undercover agent.

A lot of comics writers have also clearly written her with an accent— Fraction is one, early Bendis did too, though he emphasized it less as he wrote her more.

Some would say "as Bendis started writing all characters with the same dialogue" but I'm more charitable than that.

But there are also a few writers who specifically note her lack of accent, going back to Gene Colan, I think, in Amazing Adventures. And that's how I do it: she worked very hard to learn to speak with a general American accent.

Bucky also has a pretty general American accent, but because he was an army brat who moved around and didn't pick up many regionalisms.

I think jeff parker has her speaking with a fake cossack accent at one point, which is amazing

yeah she asks fury if he missed her cossack accent and he says it's almost as good as his I think

I like the idea of her doing a melodramatic russian persona early in her superhero career

I've read the issue, it's cute, doesn't make a lot of sense with her continuity, but it's cute.

Black Widow's earliest "madame Natasha" persona c. Tales of Suspense didn't conceal her nationality at all, so it would make sense for have an accent there… but the Silver Age is a strange place.

I think of first class as a way of updating the silver age for the sliding timescale

Natasha didn't join SHIELD until well past her early encounters with the Avengers, and she met Wanda then. So the whole premise doesn't work as like… an in continuity thing, but fine as a cute Silver Age vibe story.

I'm being a killjoy!! But generally when writers are like… giving her an accent you can distinguish on the page, they are also oversexualizing her in some way, playing on the fantasy of Eastern European women. It's very… exoticizing, I guess, and while I don't think it's always that way it has to be neccessarily it usually is, because comics.

yeah, I've read it! I think I own the print issue. I don't think Parker specifically was being skeezy, that comic is very pure, just explaining reasons why I make the characterization choices I do

and this is a good comic, and one of my favorite runs, but like— "how do you say? shennanigans" has some definite sexual subtext

Bucky was born in Indiana and comics Camp Lehigh is in northern Virginia, and it's hard because I enjoy historical slang and anachronistic teen language but his voice becomes much more boring as he grows up
