But what I read is that there would be ups and downs in lives that change the character and a person may not be always good as the first time.
I think it's just not the way people expected and wanted but that's kind of reasonable. Love is not always beautiful as the start. The story is back to reality in the start and then turn back to the tale. And if you just focus on Christine and the Phantom (as the main theme it wants to tell), you will understand what the story really wants to tell.
I suddenly came you a thought that explain why Raoul was drunk, gamble addicted and so bad to Gustave —— because he know Gustave was NOT HIS SON! He was so upset and refused to accept the truth and Gustave. On the other hand he still love Christine and try his best to turn a blind eye to these.
