Disclaimer: I appreciate 阿滴,志祺七七, and 沃草's effort and whoever puts his or her effort in such issues.
However, I think most ppl rn are neglecting the complexity of international politics and the basic functioning of international organizations--everything is just inevitably intertwined with interests and power.
1) The Chinese govt has been tremendously influencing the candidates for the WHO head directors. Not only Tedros but also the previous one are both elected bc of PCR.
This overall just shows how powerful PCR is that the US couldn’t even exert some sort of influence on WHO leadership despite its high positio in the int'l community
With these aforementioned points, raising this much money just to have a letter presented on NY Times only helps clear our name, which does not achieve the ultimate goal of this letter: improving our position in the international community.
2) Instead of using this money for NY Times, it would be more effective if the letter is presented at Geneva or somewhere that's near UN, where the politicians and the country representatives gathered.
In doing so, they have no choice but to read the letter or sth. Let's be honest: normal ppl have rlly no power to influence domestic politics, not to mention that on the international stage, where everything is just about interests.
Well but then I feel like at least our name is cleared? It is okay that we are still neglected by the community (just accept the fact lol) but we shouldn’t let our country’s name be stained. At least we can be recognized at an individual basis...
And why r we talking in English
(Our history project just makes us realize that everything is abt interest...yay...)
3) Speaking of interests, as I just said, it's so hard to move things around cuz politics is freaking complicated and ugly. And doing such things can potentially lead to Tedros or other politicians who favor in PCR's interest to stain us again as they could be saying that we are utilizing the coronavirus thing as a political propaganda. Alas jerks everywhere
That being said, instead of writing a letter to sort of condemn Tedros, it's better to promote what Taiwan has done and some instructions on medicine and basic sanitation for readers of NY Times (given that i bet they're just going to use NY Times)
By doing so, we are spreading a more positive messages and more so, such concession can potentially incite more criticisms from the readers/Americans toward WHO. Eg. While you WHO leader is continously denouncing Taiwan, they are on a completely different level :not fighting back but still spreading positivity and giving out help as much as they can
If everything is just about interest and there's not much to change in a short run, i rlly think having Tsai's official clarification and statemenet is already enough. Putting too much effort in fighting back Tedors' comment is just lowering ourself to his level
btw Tedros is just like anyone else in our life: acting like a jerk in the face of interest. His comments and behaviors are merely manifesting the fundamentals of human nature
Okay I’ve seen the draft
It really focuses too much on condemning Tedros...
We are of no difference. The only difference is that he's acting it on a much larger scale
大家共勉之
HST1222: Yay they said it's letter for the world but it seems to be more like a letter for Tedros lol
10 million dollars is a large number. Using it to spread positivity or to donate to our govt for medical purposes would be a wiser use of it
I feel like there's also this thing about mob mentality... like everyone just donate to a cause they think is right without even realizing it, but just because everyone is doing so
HST1222: did u see the story i posted yesterday (the one with ipad lol
HST1222: "The vulgar crowd always is taken by appearances, and the world consists chiefly of the vulgar."
okay, like what I just said
Tho The Prince is more about Machiavelli teaching people how gain power, some of the quotes in da book are rlly great
