The first chapter seemed EXTREMELY GOOD to me, even though everything described was EXTREMELY BAD.

My guess is something like: Marianne never shows up on the battlefield if you don't recruit her to the prof's side, so in this fic, she was with the Alliance and going out with Hilda, but she wasn't on the frontlines and Hilda was, and she probably got on a self-hate spiral that caused her to feel the need to end this war personally.

She might have been back dealing with, like, a military hospital, or she might have just not been able to take frontline fighting anymore, but either way, I bet she ends up thinking that she should have been there when Hilda got killed to try to save her.
