"I understand," Ferdi finally said out loud, looking up at Heinrich. "We have everything we can take," he added, at least from is loft but he assumed that would be clear.

It was one thing to look over Saint Teresa and see miles and miles of smog choked streets or vagabonds clinging to the last bits of cool night air. It was something else entirely to look out at the same scene and see tiny, glowing figures dancing through the thick air.

Madeira, she would tell him. Import the grapes. Her new husband would give her a thoughtful look. He would try to remain stern, but his lips would curve with appreciation and pride. Very well, my wife, he would say. Why should I invest in the grapes? Her explanation would be succinct but include the profit margins she'd calculated and the new casks--

she had designed to prevent souring. It would not include magic.

"Quit staring like a moon-brained tart. Catri needs your motherly eye on her dress for tonight." Guaspar scowled instead of smiling. He hadn't smiled at her since her father left Port Royal.

Flesh felt different than stone, just as water felt different from dust. Finding the arrowhead was not the problem, untangling its jagged edges from the knotted muscle and shattered bone, on the other hand...

She noticed the sweat when it began to sting her eyes, and that she'd forgotten to breathe when the world tilted alarmingly. She fixed the latter, but ignored the former. She did not need eyes for this.

For the first time in quite a long time, Strand didn’t need to count them or to do anything to make certain that they weren’t larger or hungrier than they should have been. This place, this little pocket had a magic of its own in that it it almost seemed to swallow it, which perhaps was one of the reasons that Alex was sleeping so soundly.

The old man sat in the desert sun his hair a dull yellow white and his eyes milky with age. Yet his voice was the voice of a man who should look twenty years younger then he was.
