Hi, I'm Kiki, I'm from Bulgaria (i.e., ESL and with a background very different from most, since I did grow up in a communist country)

My favorite thing to do ever is read. Even at times when words are hard (i.e. a chunk of text larger than about 500 words seems like a huge effort), I love it all the same

I only discovered RP in 2007 and have been weaving around it since then

(Relative to people who started in like. Middle school, I'm a baby. Then again, it's been more than a decade and I've tried to learn along the way.)

Gonna be honest Kiki, if I didn't know better I realllllly wouldn't pin you for esl (obviously I know, I've known you for... shit. a while now)

i would but it's not about usage, it's about...hm, sentence structure a little? you play with and layer your english differently

so like outside of rp context i would not
well I've known kiki for years without rping with her so maybe that's why I'm oblivious ;-)
still, mastering languages isn't a meagre skill

And yes, this is here so that people don't have to worry about asking me if something I wrote doesn't parse right
almost clueless
Heh. English does have a certain flexibility for sentence structure, and that helps. It often ends up as a poetic variant instead of "wrong."
almost clueless
"English doesn't “borrow” from other languages: it follows them down dark alleys, knocks them over, and goes through their pockets for loose grammar and valuable vocabulary."
and to be fair, no one seems to know how to use it anyway
kikibug13
see, you say 'flexibility' and I laugh

because in Bulgarian you can easily have the verb before the sentence's subject
kikibug13

and that's... really weird in English

I've had people jump down my throat for getting my prepositions "wrong," even though in the Midwest it's standard usage.

I understand it's the German influence lingering all the way to modern days.
kikibug13

/nods
kikibug13

but yeah, to me the English sentence structure is inflexible
almost clueless
HAH, people are nuts because they can barely keep up with the rules themselves.
kikibug13
and I keep forgetting that when I get too distracted/tired
kiki just beat it with a stick until it complies... that's what I do
almost clueless
Huh. (contemplates that)

That! That's what native speakers do, anyway! XD

I used to take french lessons, that language did not want to take a beating
Haunt
At this point any odd structure I see I usually write off as "that must be what the kids are saying now."
kikibug13
I mean, on the other hand in English the same word can be different things (verb, noun, adjective) at the same time, and that makes the structure kind of necessary
Haunt
In general that is. Not from you specifically.
....yeah we like to do that. I apologuise for the language

(I also know, functionally, Russian, French, and Spanish, though less fluently than English. I can still read in them, though.)
I understand exactly enough french to make my quebecois friends think twice about using it around me lmao

I must plead "American" to have said that... In the tiny smattering of other languages I've studied a little, imposing English sentence structure without thinking about it tends to be adequate, so I never paid attention past that. X3
kikibug13

(there are ways in which English is flexible. Sentence structure is not it.)

What are some of your favorite books?
kikibug13
They vary a lot from time to time but. Jonathan Livingston Seagull. The Three Musketeers. Swordspoint. The Curse of Chalion. Memory. Ummm many more.
Ohh, Curse of Chalion. Such a great book.

And Memory is my favorite of the Vorkosigan ones. =) I reread it often to remind myself that life Does Not Do What We've Planned.

Memory and ACC share that top spot but memory is easier as stand-alone
Every time I read it I end up going on, and then starting over from the beginning, and reading allllllll the books. Bujold is to be feared in that respect.
