I took Uta from TG:RE but both my points were TG, so I'm gonna say no.

it can be anything throughout the character's history as long as the event is 'canon' to your source, so if the books count as game-canon in lore/whatever then yeah go for it.

(example: apping bruce wayne from the current DC movies, you couldn't cite 'dealing with damian wayne!' as a formative historical point because damian doesn't exist in the movies)
