ok update the iron could in fact be saved, unlike the molten mess of inner lining, so that's just permanently going to be fucked, cool cool. and i went through not one but two of the broken needles before actually checking which ones were the heavy-duty ones, and then promptly broke one of those by inserting it wrong. i hate hobbies they're terrible.
