Rinne is a shinigami who helps unrested souls pass onto the next life (reincarnate), and Sakura (the main female lead) had spirited away at some point and are food while she was there, so now she can see the dead and often assists Rinne with helping these ghosts.

Naturally there is a male exorcist who is in love with Sakura, and a female shinigami who is in love with Rinne. (Cause Rumiko loves her unrequited romances).
