What does Glossiness under Specular do? I keep changing it and it doesn't seem to do anything

It does, try changing your windlight to see the materials better. I perfer to keep the glossiness low, and have it reflect a color that makes sense for your material instead of white.

you really need a light prim to see materials properly, also the materials need to be done correctly

lol ok! But if you had a red velvet with materials, you would use a lighter version of the red as the sheen color. -^

GG responding to the wrong person lawl. The only time it seems appropriate for the material is when the gloss is high but I'll try other windlights
