Skip Beat! is about a girl who is badly disillusioned about love seeking revenge on the guy who hurt her, but ultimately it's about her growing up and learning to love herself. Though the heroine is technically
a schoolgirl, very little time is devoted to the high school setting. She's learning to act, and fighting to become successful in the entertainment industry. You know the format of most sports manga? Substitute
"acting" for "sports", and that's how the format often works. She meets friends, rivals, and mentors, and you get to see her work through each new role.
But also! It is definitely a romance manga, with a detailed, gradual development, though so far only a little more than a year has actually passed in the plot, not counting flashbacks.
