Can we get like a legal go-to for rl artists who find themselves in this situation? Detroit Techno Militia was in SL once, and now I am. We obviously like it here. There should be a smoother process for this
aemeth: DMCAs apply for RL artists as well, note the part it says "Please note that these notifications and counter-notifications are real-world legal notices provided outside of the Second Life environment."
Malt is a part of the same art group that I did a Red Bull fellowship with, and they've done DMCA's for someone who stole work for tshirt business. But I don't know if they've filed for a video game before.
But if this went well then it would probably encourage more muralists to set up and properly sell their work here so everyone could have access to their murals--the right way.
It cannot be stopped, yet doing nothing is not an option. The only alternative is to offer a deterrent. In the past it has helped, a little goes a long way.
Right now, it is essentially unregulated. It is seen as acceptable by both stores and customers a lot more than it was in the past because it has been a long time since any type of deterrent has been visible.
The lab does not want to be the police, they have never wanted to be the police. But you also are not allowed to be the police in world. There is no police.
aemeth: Someone does not have to join SL to file a DMCA notification. It's a RL written process, as detailed on that page I linked. These are existing laws to protect copyrighted content on the Internet.
Cake, the best thing, aside from the DMCA process, is just to do what you are doing: Being vocal about it. Awareness is the biggest deterrent out there, and when more and more people talk about this, it helps.
Thanks guys! I'll see if Malt responds soon. I know he's working on more murals but we have a common gallery owner friend. I am definitely bringing this up with them.
Torley: Also one more thing, can there be a rule introduced about sims that rip art not being featured in the Destination Guide, much less the Editor's Picks? It even has corporate ads all over the sim.
aemeth: For that, go ahead and email [email protected] with those concerns. The Editorial Team has unlisted places before for inappropriate and infringing content, and will continue to do so.
