Like heaven! You add whatever you want in them tbh but the basic is like butter and salt. Pepper if you want. But it's from a corn hominy.
It's like thick porridge. Shrimp and Grits is good.
Been meaning to try grits also for the last 15 yrs
My mum puts cheese in her grits. I don't like my grits all thick ugh but they gotta be creamy.
If made well they're an ultimate creamy comfort food
if made horribly theyre a goopy sticky mess
From an english p.o.v, I always expect porridge to taste sweet and oaty, grits is like a corn porridge thats savoury, and personally I found it really unpleasant lol
I always imagined them to be like a sort of cookie so I'm all shocked now
They're not gritty at all then. My Mum ordered biscuits & gravy in California and was taken aback by the white, creamy gravy.
imagine white rice if it was chopped/minced and creamy. they take on the flavor of whatever you add to them.
and one bowl or plate will keep you full all day, usually if I eat it for breakfast I will skip lunch.
white gravy is awesome, its creamy peppery thing!
there are Hominy grits, which are made from Hominy corn, which is corn leached with lye. And there are yellow corn grits which have more texture when cooked.
The are called grits because they are much more coarsely ground than cornmeal.
it's corn and dried but ground up so it's small and course. You add water and let them expand during the cooking phase so it's kinda of a porridge type feeling. That's due to the way it expands, sorts like how
rice expands in water but rice is a much larger grain than what grits are. Then you can add all sorts of things to it like I love cheese grits which melts in the heat. We sometimes put an fried egg and meat
like sausage in it to make a grits breakfast type bowl or you can put salt and pepper. It also depends how much water you put in it when cooking too. I like my grits thick like very thick where it's a more
course feeling but you can go softer with more water to make it creamy. It's pretty versatile depending on your taste but since it's corn based it will taste more like cornmeal flavor really
Grits is one of those foods that you either love or hate. It is harder to love if you didn't grow up eating it
People also eat grits as a breakfast cereal with cream or milk and sugar.
I even grew up with the instant grits and love them, but not the same as home made grits my FIL makes the best grits ever
Girls Raised In The South (of course)!
Its corn based thou so can be gluten free easily
Garlic Cheese grits! Close Southern cousin to polenta.
Imagine a more creamy, much less firm polenta.
Traditionally, polenta uses a different kind of corn than grits, and so the result is polenta comes together more firm and coarse, while grits come together a little softer, more like a porridge, but the flavor
